Watch Indian TV and movies from abroad
Live outside India or travelling? Here is why JioHotstar, ZEE5 and SonyLIV stop working abroad, and how an India-server VPN brings them back.
Watching Indian streaming from abroad
Try opening JioHotstar or ZEE5 from outside India and you will hit an error or a blank screen instead of your show. The apps read your location from your internet connection, and once you are abroad they decide you no longer count as an Indian viewer. The fix is a VPN with servers in India: connect to one, your connection looks local again, and the apps start playing the same content you would see at home. It works for the diaspora and for anyone travelling on a short trip.
Which Indian platforms are blocked abroad
- JioHotstar: the biggest Indian service, home of IPL cricket and Hindi shows, blocked outside India.
- ZEE5: Hindi plus many regional languages, shows, films and originals, geo-locked abroad.
- SonyLIV: Sony’s Hindi shows, originals and some sport, restricted outside the country.
- Sun NXT: South Indian content in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, blocked overseas.
- Hoichoi: Bengali films and series, limited to Indian viewers without a VPN.
How to unlock them with a VPN
Sign up with a VPN that has India servers, install its app on the device you watch on, and connect to an Indian location. Then open your streaming app and sign in as normal. If a title still will not load, switch to a different India server and clear the app, since stale location data is usually the culprit.
What to check in a VPN for this
- India servers: it must offer locations inside India, not just nearby countries.
- Speed: fast enough for HD or 4K without constant buffering.
- Devices: apps for your phone, laptop and tablet, with enough simultaneous connections.
- TV app: a native app for Fire TV or Android TV, or router support.
- Reliability: a track record of actually working with Indian apps, not just promising to.

Airtel Xstream Play is an aggregator that packages content from a range of Indian streaming apps into a single app and subscription. It’s only for Airtel customers with an active SIM, DTH satellite TV, or broadband connection. The operator is Xtelify Limited, a Bharti Airtel subsidiary based in Gurugram. The Airtel Xstream Premium subscription launched in 2022, and the app, formerly Airtel TV and Airtel Xstream, took its current name in 2023. The Airtel Xstream Play Premium pack covers SonyLIV, Lionsgate Play, Sun NXT, aha, ShemarooMe, Chaupal, and more, while the 25+ OTT Pack adds Netflix, JioHotstar, and ZEE5. Free content includes movies and shows, plus live channels through Distro TV. You can watch on Android, iPhone, iPad, the web, Android TV, Apple TV, and the Airtel Xstream Box. The service works only in India.
Amazon MX Player is a free, ad supported Indian streaming service. It took shape in 2024, when Amazon bought MX Player from Times Internet and merged it with its miniTV service. The core catalog has no subscription, just a connection and an appetite for Indian entertainment. The library leans on Indian web series, films and originals such as Aashram, Bhaukaal, Raktanchal and Campus Diaries. You will also find dubbed Korean, Turkish and Chinese dramas in the MX Vdesi section, plus a growing anime corner. Most titles play in Hindi and regional languages, and there is no sport. A small paid tier, MX Gold, removes most ads and adds offline downloads. The service runs in India only, and since May 2026 Amazon has been folding it into Prime Video.
Chaupal is a subscription streaming service with feature films, web series, short films, and originals in Punjabi, Haryanvi, and Bhojpuri. It’s run by Bosna Digital Entertainment of Chandigarh, India, and the Punjabi TV channel Pitaara TV announced the service’s launch in August 2021. Originals include “Outlaw,” Gippy Grewal’s 2023 web series debut, and “Pardhan,” a 2026 series about student politics. Theatrical releases such as “Carry On Jatta 3” and “Akaal: The Unconquered” round out the lineup. Plans are monthly or annual: the Gold tier is aimed at viewers who want HD, downloads, and multiple profiles, and the operator says the annual Worldwide plan lets you stream from anywhere. The operator also describes the service as ad-free. You can watch on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android, Android TV, Fire TV, and the web. Chaupal works in many countries, including the US, though its FAQ excludes France and China and the catalog can differ by country.
Dangal Play is the streaming service of Enterr10, an Indian media group founded by Manish Singhal in 2004. It offers Dangal TV shows and movies, including Bhojpuri titles, plus live streams of four Enterr10 channels: Dangal, Dangal 2, Bhojpuri Cinema, and Enterr10 Bangla. Indore-based Enter10 Television Private Limited runs the service, and its apps launched in November 2022. Some content is free with ads. The website and Android app sell Dangal Lite, Plus, and Max plans; Lite is mobile-only. Subscriptions are ad-free except on live channels. Watch on iPhone, iPad, Android, Fire TV, the web, and a standalone Android TV app. According to the FAQ, users in India sign in with a mobile number and international users with email. However, the terms of use limit availability to certain countries, and content may vary by location.
DocuBay is a subscription streaming service for documentaries, with some titles free to watch once you sign up. It’s run by Mumbai-based Docubay Media, part of the IN10 Media group, renamed The EPIC Company in November 2025. Launched worldwide in August 2019, it offers documentaries from around the world on history, nature, crime, and war. DocuBay Originals include Fanatics, a 2025 Asian Television Awards winner, and the true-crime film The Dupatta Killer, a winner at the Indian Telly Streaming Awards 2026. The monthly or quarterly Premium plan offers Full HD, while the annual OneTribe plan includes titles in 4K, two screens at once, and unlimited downloads. Most documentaries have subtitles, currently in English only. DocuBay works in many countries, including the US, but its terms say availability and the catalog vary by location.
EPIC ON is an Indian streaming service with free content and a paid subscription. Launched in 2017, it is run by Mumbai-based IN10 Media, whose parent group became The EPIC Company in November 2025. The library covers Hindi movies and series, Bhojpuri films, foreign titles dubbed in Hindi, documentaries, and history and mythology shows. It also offers originals such as Tatlubaaz and Griha Laxmi with Hina Khan, plus the group’s live channels. Paid plans unlock titles marked PREMIUM and, per the pricing page, come without ads, with video up to Full HD and up to three user profiles. For now, only selected shows have subtitles. EPIC ON also works outside India, but its terms of use say viewing is meant primarily for the country where the account was created, and available titles vary by location.
ETV Win is a subscription streaming service from Eenadu Television, a Ramoji Group company in Hyderabad that runs the Telugu TV network ETV. The platform launched in 2019 and relaunched with paid plans in March 2023. Its catalog of Telugu movies and shows includes originals such as #90’s: A Middle Class Biopic, Constable Kanakam, and Little Hearts. The service also carries seven live ETV channels. Premium has ads and streams in Full HD, while ad-free Premium Plus goes up to 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound. Both plans allow three screens, and only one of them can be a TV. All content is in Telugu, and subtitles aren’t available yet. According to the operator, a subscription works in the region where it was purchased.
Eros Now is a Bollywood-first streaming service that launched back in 2012, and its scale is the headline. The catalogue runs to well over eleven thousand films, plus roughly a quarter of a million music titles and a growing slate of originals, mostly in Hindi with plenty of regional Indian languages alongside. Picture quality tops out at HD, and the platform is marketed across more than 150 countries, though what you can actually watch shifts a lot depending on where you are. Today Eros Now is owned and run by Xfinite Global PLC, which acquired it in July 2023 and folded it under the Eros Innovation banner. One honest caveat before you sign up: subscribers regularly flag billing errors and auto-renewals that prove stubborn to cancel.
FanCode is India’s multi-sport streaming service, run out of Mumbai by Dream Sports, the company behind the Dream11 fantasy app, which launched the platform back in 2019. Watching it, though, only works from inside India. It happens to be the country’s exclusive home for Formula 1 along with F2, F3 and F1 Academy, and it also carries MotoGP, plenty of cricket, the Indian Super League, ATP tennis, PGA Tour golf and kabaddi. You can take out an Unlimited membership or just grab one-off passes for a tour, a single match or a whole season, and there’s a genuinely useful free tier on top with highlights, live scores and some live cricket. The service sailed past 100 million users in 2024.
Hoichoi is the streaming home of Bengali storytelling. Launched in September 2017 by SVF Entertainment in Kolkata, it was built from day one for the Bengali community spread across the globe. You get more than two hundred original web series and over six hundred films, every one of them in Bengali, from detective favourites like The Eken, Byomkesh and Montu Pilot to dramas such as Indu, Kaalratri and the 2026 release Queen. This is a service about culture rather than spectacle, so video tops out at HD with no 4K. A limited free tier lets you sample the catalogue, while a subscription unlocks the full library. The lineup shifts by region, with the US selection smaller than India’s, and plan names like Prabasi and Pujari speak directly to life abroad.
Disney+ Hotstar was Disney’s India-facing streamer, and it lived and breathed cricket: the IPL sat at its centre, wrapped in a deep Bollywood catalogue, regional Indian dramas and the full Disney, Marvel and Star Wars libraries. That brand is gone now. In February 2025 the Indian service merged with JioCinema to become JioHotstar, the JioStar venture run jointly by Reliance and Disney, today the country’s largest streaming service and still the exclusive home of the IPL and ICC cricket, now with an HBO Max hub and Peacock titles layered on top. In October 2025 the Southeast Asian markets (Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand) switched to plain Disney+, while a diaspora-focused Hotstar keeps running in the UK, Canada and Singapore. If it is the IPL or the Indian catalogue you are chasing from abroad, JioHotstar in India is what you actually want, and that is exactly where a VPN earns its keep.
KLiKK is a Bengali subscription streaming service with movies, original web series, short videos, music, audio, podcasts, and kids’ content. It is run by Angel Television Private Limited of Kolkata, and the app launched in November 2020. Originals include the comedy series “Virginpur,” the series “Debi,” and “Katakuti 2,” directed by Raja Chanda. The operator describes KLiKK as having no irritating ads. Content is in Bengali, and the FAQ says most of it has English subtitles. You can watch on iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, a standalone Android TV app, and the web. According to the operator, Fire TV and Chromecast work too. Up to two devices can stream at once, and offline downloads are available only in the iOS and Android apps. Subscription prices vary by country, and the terms of use note that content availability may depend on your location.
Kutingg is a family-friendly Hindi streaming service from Balaji Telefilms, run out of Mumbai through Alt Digital Media. It arrived as the successor to ALTT (formerly ALTBalaji), which Indian authorities blocked in July 2025 over objectionable content, and it leans into a deliberately wholesome, all-ages identity. The catalogue rests on two pillars: snappy vertical micro-dramas built for the phone, plus longer family shows and dramas made for easy binge sessions. You get more than 150 Hindi web series, with launch titles such as Saas Bahu aur Swaad, Missing Priya and Janlewa Ishq. Everything streams in HD and is designed mobile-first, so it travels comfortably in your pocket. The company reports roughly half a million subscribers.
Lionsgate Play is an ad-free Indian subscription service with Hollywood movies and shows for India and other Asian markets. Run by Mumbai-based Lions Gate Play LLP, it has been owned since January 2026 by Rohit Jain, who licenses the brand and library from the Lionsgate studio. It’s a separate service from Starz and Lionsgate+. The brand debuted in 2018 as a block inside SonyLIV and got its own app in December 2020. It offers major studio content, selected titles dubbed into Hindi and other Indian languages, Indian originals such as Hiccups & Hookups, and regional premieres announced for 2026. Quarterly and annual plans allow streaming on up to three devices at once, plus downloads on phones and tablets. Its terms tie the service to India, though the operator’s website also lists other Asian countries.
ManoramaMAX is a Malayalam-language streaming service launched in September 2019 by MM TV, part of the Malayala Manorama group in Kerala, India. It runs on a freemium model: in India and across the Gulf you watch free with ads while premium titles are paid, and if you are outside those regions everything sits behind an international plan. The library blends catch-up from the Mazhavil Manorama channel, more than 400 Malayalam films, MAX Exclusives originals such as CID MAX, Open Heart, Picture Perfect and Soul Stories, plus reality shows, news and live TV in crisp HD 1080p. It is built for Malayali audiences at home and for the large diaspora in the Gulf. Note that subscriptions are region-locked, so an Indian plan only unlocks premium content while you are physically in India.
STAGE OTT is an Indian subscription streaming service with movies, web series, and vertical microdramas in seven dialects and languages: Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, and Hindi. Delhi-based STAGE Technologies runs it; founders Vinay Singhal, Parveen Singhal, and Shashank Vaishnav launched it in November 2019 with Haryanvi content. Titles include Bhairavi, Saanwari, and the Bengali series Dahan. Plans are monthly or quarterly, with a seven-day trial for a nominal fee. Playback is ad-free, but a September 2026 partnership brought ad placements to the app’s home screen. Most content has Hindi and English subtitles; downloads require the Android or iOS app. Watch on iPhone, iPad, Android, or the web; the company also lists Android TV plus Samsung and LG smart TVs. The service targets India: its sign-in form offers the Indian +91 code and its FAQ lists UPI payments, yet the app is also in the US App Store.
Saina Play is a Malayalam streaming service with movies, web series, and music videos. Some content is free with ads, a Premium subscription removes them, and individual titles can be rented for 24 hours. The operator is Saina Infotainments of Kochi; the Saina group started out in 1985 as a video rental and distribution business. The app dates back to 2019. Titles include “Chathuram,” the 2026 comedy “Pluto,” and the classic “Manichitrathazhu.” The App Store offers monthly and annual plans. Downloads work only in the mobile apps, and each account supports up to five profiles. Watch on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android, Android TV, Fire TV, or the web, though you can’t subscribe in the TV apps. The app is available in many countries, including the US, but the operator’s FAQ ties accounts to the country of registration, so the catalog may vary when you travel.
ShemarooMe is a subscription streaming service from Shemaroo Entertainment, a Mumbai company that started out in 1962 as a book rental business before moving into VHS distribution and film rights. The service launched in 2019 and, since 2021, has focused mainly on Gujarati audiences, with films, web series, and stage plays in their language. Bollywood classics such as Jab We Met and Bhagam Bhag, Marathi and Punjabi titles, spiritual content, and live broadcasts from temples round out the catalog. The Premium plan is ad-free, allows streaming on up to four screens at once, and includes downloads for offline viewing. Without a subscription, only selected free titles with ads are available. Each account is tied to the country where it was registered.
SonyLIV is the Indian streaming service run by Sony Pictures Networks India, legally Culver Max Entertainment, based in Mumbai and part of Japan’s Sony Group. It was one of the country’s earliest streamers, launching back in 2013. Its reputation rests on ambitious originals. Series such as Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, Maharani, Rocket Boys, Gullak and Undekhi earned critical praise, while the business reality show Shark Tank India became the platform’s flagship. Live sport adds another draw, with New Zealand cricket, UEFA Champions League and Europa League football, and the Australian Open in tennis. The model is hybrid. Paid tiers reach up to 4K, but ads still run during sport and marquee exclusives, so there is no fully ad free option. The complete Indian catalogue and the cheap local pricing are geo locked to India. Abroad you get only a limited diaspora cut, sold in markets like the US through YouTube TV and Primetime Channels, while the full Indian catalogue and its low prices stay locked to India.
Sun NXT is the streaming home of Sun TV Network, the Chennai media giant that launched the service back in 2017. Its heart is South Indian cinema in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, rounded out with Hindi, Bengali and Marathi films, hugely popular TV serials, kids’ programming, news and more than forty live channels with catch-up. The library runs to roughly 4,500 titles. You can dip in through a free, ad-supported tier or step up to paid plans, the top one serving 4K in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos sound. Sun NXT was the first in India to bring Dolby Vision to live TV. The full Indian catalogue stays locked to India, while abroad you get a licensed selection.
TarangPlus is an Odia streaming service launched in 2019 by the Odisha Television group and run by Odisha Television Limited in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. It offers serials and shows from the Tarang TV channel, movies, original web series, jatra folk theater, music, devotional programs, and news. According to the operator, it also carries live streams of OTV, Tarang TV, Alankar TV, Prarthana TV, and Tarang Music. Some content is free with ads. A monthly or annual subscription gives you full access that the plans page calls ad-free, and an annual plan for live channels is also available, though under the terms it may not include on-demand content. You can watch on iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, a standalone Android TV app, Fire TV, and the web. The terms of use limit TarangPlus to select countries based on licensing rights and explicitly prohibit using a VPN or proxy to access it from territories where the operator lacks rights.
Tata Play Binge is an Indian aggregator that combines more than 30 streaming apps into one, with a single login and subscription. It’s run by Tata Play Limited, a Tata Group joint venture based in Mumbai. The service launched in 2019 as Tata Sky Binge, was renamed in 2022, and opened to everyone that same year, not just Tata Play satellite TV customers. According to its terms, it doesn’t own the content itself and instead gives access to apps such as JioHotstar, ZEE5, Apple TV, Lionsgate Play, Discovery+ and ShemarooMe. Of the three main plans, Flexi Smart and Flexi Max include a selection of apps, while Infinity covers the full list. The operator says you can watch on Android and iOS phones, iPads, tataplaybinge.com, Android TV, Samsung and LG smart TVs, and the Amazon Fire TV Stick. The service works only in India.
Waves OTT is the streaming service of Prasar Bharati, India’s public broadcaster, which oversees Doordarshan television and Akashvani, also known as All India Radio. Launched in November 2024, it pairs Doordarshan archive classics such as Hum Log, Byomkesh Bakshi, and Ramayan with live TV and radio, including 35 Doordarshan channels and Akashvani stations. The Gold plan is free. Paid Diamond and Platinum plans add downloads, and Platinum goes up to 4K. Sign-in uses a one-time code, sent by email if you don’t have an Indian mobile number. In our testing, content played only in India.
ZEE5 is an Indian streaming service launched in February 2018 by Zee Entertainment Enterprises, a media group based in Mumbai. After the Sony merger fell apart in early 2024, Zee remains an independent Indian company, and ZEE5 stands as one of the biggest homes for South Asian entertainment. The library spans films and series in roughly twelve Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, plus dozens of live TV channels and originals such as Sunflower and Taj: Divided by Blood. It runs on a hybrid model: a free, ad supported layer and paid tiers up to 4K. In 2026 it also holds India digital rights to the FIFA World Cup and streams DP World ILT20 cricket. Abroad it operates as ZEE5 Global for the diaspora, though the full Indian catalogue and the cheaper local pricing stay locked to India.
Why Indian platforms block you abroad
The block is about licensing, not about you. Indian services pay for the rights to stream films, shows and cricket inside India, and those deals usually stop at the border. To stay within their contracts they have to check where you are connecting from and turn off viewers who are outside the country. An India-server VPN puts you back inside that licensed zone.
Is using a VPN legal?
In most countries, yes. Running a VPN is legal in itself, and you are accessing services you pay for rather than pirating anything. The sensible line is to respect each platform’s terms of service and the laws of the country you are in, but the act of connecting through India is not a crime.
Typical situations
This comes up most for the Indian diaspora in the US, the UK, the Gulf, Canada and Australia who want to keep up with shows and cricket from home. It also helps students abroad who grew up on these apps, and travellers who simply do not want to miss a match or a finale while they are away for a few weeks.
