How to Watch BBC News from Anywhere: VPN Guide 2026
The BBC has run a rolling news service since 1991, and since the 2023 channel merger it all sits under one banner. BBC News delivers a 24-hour live news stream completely free from London, Washington DC and Singapore, so breaking news and analysis are there whenever and wherever you want them. There is no subscription to buy: the international feed is ad-supported and lives on bbc.com/news, YouTube and FAST apps such as Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus and Xumo Play.
The snag shows up in countries that censor the British broadcaster. China has blocked it since 2021 and Russia since 2022 over the war in Ukraine. That is where Surfshark earns its keep: connect to a server in a free country and the live picture in 1080p loads as if you never left home. Travelling and want your home UK feed instead? Pick a UK server and BBC News opens as if from London.

Who’s behind the service?
What is BBC News
BBC News is the BBC’s free 24-hour international news channel, the rolling live service from Britain’s public broadcaster. Don’t confuse it with iPlayer: there are no films or box sets here, just breaking news, live coverage and analysis from trusted journalists. Outside the UK you can watch it free, with ads, on bbc.com/news, the BBC News YouTube channel and FAST apps such as Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus and Xumo Play. The unified BBC News brand launched in April 2023, streaming in up to 1080p.

Company and history
- The BBC announced it would merge the domestic BBC News Channel with the international BBC World News into one brand. The cost-saving move was set to save around £500 million and cut a number of newsroom roles.
- BBC World News rebranded as BBC News. A single brand now carried two feeds: a domestic UK one with opt-out coverage and an ad-funded international one. The merger cut roughly 50 newsroom roles.
- The international channel landed for free on US FAST platforms: Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream and more. The move more than doubled the live channel's reach in the United States.
- During the UK general election, the domestic British feed ran its own separate election coverage. International viewers meanwhile stayed on the standard world news stream without the UK opt-outs.
- The UK government, via the DCMS department, confirmed the TV licence would stay in place to the end of the current charter. The international ad-funded BBC News stream meanwhile remained free of any licence.
- The UK government launched the BBC Charter Review, a formal look at the royal charter that runs to the end of 2027. On the table was how the public broadcaster might be funded once that charter expires.
- The UK TV licence rose to £180 a year. The increase hit British households at home, but the international BBC News stream stayed free and licence-free for everyone watching from abroad.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our BBC News testing team · Updated June 10, 2026
- Outside the UK, watch BBC News completely free on bbc.com/news, the official YouTube channel, or FAST apps like Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus and Xumo Play, no sign-up needed.
- Don't confuse BBC News with BBC iPlayer: the news channel is free worldwide, while iPlayer is the UK catch-up service locked behind the TV licence (GBP 180/year from April 2026).
- Travelling somewhere BBC is censored, like China or Russia? Run Surfshark and connect through a UK or German server to reach the live stream again.
- BBC News streams at up to 1080p with no HDR, so a basic connection on an older TV, laptop or phone is plenty for a sharp, stutter-free picture.
- To pull the UK BBC iPlayer feed while abroad, connect Surfshark to a British server first, otherwise your foreign IP gets blocked from UK-only content.
