How to Watch GB News from Anywhere: VPN Guide 2026
GB News is Britain’s most opinion-led and most-talked-about news channel, a polarising voice that has topped the news ratings by average viewers since January 2026 to claim the Britain’s number one badge. Launched in 2021 and bankrolled by Sir Paul Marshall and the Legatum fund, it leans on Nigel Farage, Jacob Rees-Mogg and sharp commentators, and the live channel is free to watch, even though the business has run at a loss for years and survives on cash injections from its backers.
Travel outside the UK and the picture changes. The live stream is often free on YouTube, but the official player, the app, the on-demand library and the free FAST channel are aimed at British viewers and tend to go dark abroad based on your IP. A VPN fixes that in a minute. Connect through Surfshark to a UK server, pick up a British IP, and GB News serves you the same 1080p feed you would get back home. The channel is free, so you only pay for the VPN.

What is GB News
GB News is a British news and opinion channel that runs around the clock. It launched in June 2021 and is run by All Perspectives Ltd, the company tied to Sir Paul Marshall and the Legatum fund. You can watch the live feed for free on the web, in the app, on FAST platforms and on YouTube. An optional paid GB News Membership unlocks extras only, while the core channel stays free. Its presenters include Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, and the channel makes no secret of its right leaning editorial stance. Since January 2026 it has branded itself Britain’s number one on average viewership. The official player is built mainly for audiences in the United Kingdom.

Company and history
- The channel launched with "Welcome to GB News" from Paddington Basin in London, Britain’s first TV news start-up since Sky News in 1989. Andrew Neil served as its first chairman.
- Andrew Neil walked away from the chairman and presenter roles after a rocky launch. The schedule and leadership began regrouping around opinion shows and commentators rather than straight news.
- The broadcaster rolled out paid "GB News Membership" in three tiers, adding paywalled documents, exclusive shows, quizzes and live events. The scheme is optional and the live channel stayed free.
- Ofcom fined the channel £100,000 for breaching impartiality rules with its "People’s Forum" programme featuring then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The broadcaster rejected the ruling and sought judicial review.
- The High Court quashed two Ofcom rulings over presenter Jacob Rees-Mogg, the first successful judicial review of how the Broadcasting Code is applied. The regulator then withdrew several further decisions.
- GB News branded itself "Britain’s Number One" after six straight months leading news channels on average viewership, though it kept a smaller, more loyal audience and lower total reach than BBC and Sky.
- Annual accounts showed a narrowed £22m loss for the year to May 2025, with revenue up to £26m. Even so, the channel’s total losses since launch have passed £131m, and its owners keep funding it.
