How to Watch S4C Clic outside the UK: VPN Guide 2026
Wales has run its own Welsh-language public channel since 2012, and the catch-up app S4C Clic pours out the long-running soap Pobol y Cwm, the North Wales saga Rownd a Rownd, Sgorio rugby and the Cyw kids strand entirely for free. The catch is geography: watching S4C Clic in the US trips the geo-lock, because while a limited international section opens worldwide, most of the library and the flagship Welsh dramas and sport are fenced to British IP addresses and serve an unavailable message instead.
The fix takes a couple of minutes. Surfshark swaps your location to a UK server, S4C Clic then reads you as a viewer back home in Wales, and everything including the live channel plays in 1080p. It stays free because this is a public broadcaster funded by the UK TV licence rather than a paid subscription. The app runs on the web, phones, tablets and smart TVs, and individual shows linger in the archive for 35 days after they first air.

Quick answer
Can you watch S4C Clic outside the UK?
Most of the library, no. A limited international section opens worldwide, but the flagship Welsh dramas, Sgorio rugby and the live channel are fenced to British IP addresses, so a stateside connection hits an unavailable notice. Connect Surfshark to a UK server and S4C Clic treats you as a viewer in Wales, unlocking the full archive and Newyddion news in 1080p. There is nothing to pay for the content itself, since it is a licence-funded public service.

⚠️
Steer clear of free VPNs. Most of them actually collect and sell your data, lack proper security audits, and can even expose you to malware. They’re also useless for streaming. Platforms block them instantly, leaving you with more headaches than solutions. Stick to paid VPNs with verified audits, like Surfshark, if you want something that actually works.
S4C Clic is the free streaming and catch-up platform of S4C, the Welsh public broadcaster whose channel first went on air in 1982. Programming is primarily in Welsh (Cymraeg), with Welsh and English subtitles, and most shows stay available to catch up on for 35 days. You will find Welsh drama such as Pobol y Cwm, sport including rugby and Sgorio, the Cyw block for children, Newyddion news and live broadcast. The archive and catch-up are free after a free sign-up; a valid UK TV Licence is formally required only for watching live broadcast, the same as any other British broadcaster. The service is available in the UK only.

Company and history
Major changes
Sianel Pedwar Cymru went on air on 1 November as the first television channel aimed solely at Welsh-speaking viewers, laying the groundwork for the later streaming library.
The channel relaunched an HD service on Sky and Freesat on 7 June, just before Euro 2016, where Wales reached the semi-finals; its earlier Clirlun HD simulcast had closed in late 2012.
Under the Clic brand, the service gained a modernised website and app with a live stream and an archive of all Welsh programming, offering catch-up for 35 days after broadcast.
Public funding moved entirely to the UK TV licence for the first time, with a budget of about £88.8m, keeping viewing on the app free of charge.
The broadcaster aired over 170 hours from the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham, which drew 175,000 visitors between 2 and 9 August, with the streaming archive covering the whole festival.
The broadcaster and the BBC announced an expanded partnership: premium Welsh dramas and live sport will hit the iPlayer homepage UK-wide for the first time, with kids strands Cyw and Stwnsh on iPlayer Kids.

5 tips from our S4C Clic testing team · Updated June 13, 2026
1
S4C Clic is free, but you need a valid UK TV Licence plus a free registered account before you can press play.
2
Most shows stay on catch-up for 35 days, so you can binge Welsh drama like Pobol y Cwm or Sgorio football long after broadcast.
3
Turn on the English subtitles in the player: programming is in Welsh, yet subtitles open up the dramas and live rugby even if you do not speak Cymraeg.
4
Clic is geo-blocked outside the UK, so connect Surfshark to a UK server to watch your Welsh shows while travelling.
5
Beyond the browser, grab the app on Freeview Play, smart TVs or Firestick to stream live channels and box sets on the big screen.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before subscribing to S4C Clic.
Nothing. S4C Clic is a Welsh public broadcaster funded by the UK TV licence, so the live channel and archive are free and only a quick sign-up is needed. From the US you only deal with the geo-lock, which Surfshark clears on a UK server. Unlike the BBC iPlayer subscription debate, there is no card and no fee to pay here.
Most shows are in Welsh, but nearly all carry Welsh and English subtitles and some sport offers English commentary, so dramas like Pobol y Cwm or Rownd a Rownd are watchable without the language. Connect Surfshark to a UK server, open the player and switch on the subtitle track that suits you. The full library appears once your IP reads as British.
Not for the app itself. The catch-up archive and most content are available after a free sign-up. Live TV in Britain formally requires a UK TV licence, the same as any other British broadcaster. From the US you connect Surfshark to a UK server and the content loads just as BBC iPlayer would.
It runs on web browsers, the iOS and Android apps, smart TVs and Freeview Play. Install your VPN on the same device, or on the router so the TV also shows a British IP. Surfshark has apps for all of these, so you switch location with one tap and S4C Clic reads you as a viewer in Wales watching from home.
Mainly Welsh rugby, the JD Cymru Premier football league and the Sgorio magazine show. Last season the channel aired 48 live domestic matches and it is lining up Welsh commentary for the 2026 Women's Six Nations. Reach the streams from the US with Surfshark on a UK server. Some feeds add English commentary, much like BBC iPlayer rugby coverage.
Not reliably. Free VPNs tend to have few UK servers, slow speeds and IP ranges the channel blocks fast, so playback stalls or fails. Their data caps rarely cover a single match either. A paid Surfshark is steadier, with UK servers that hold 1080p without buffering and clear the geo-lock on the first try.
Usually 35 days after broadcast, then they drop off the catch-up archive. A few flagship series and festival strands such as the Eisteddfod linger longer. If you want an older episode, check the archive regularly. From the US just keep Surfshark connected to a UK server, and the library behaves exactly as it does for a viewer in Britain.
S4C Clic is the Welsh broadcaster's own streaming service with a live channel and archive, whereas BBC iPlayer is a separate British platform. Since January 2026, premium Welsh dramas and sport also surface on the iPlayer homepage UK-wide. You unlock both from the US the same way, with Surfshark connected to a UK server reading your IP as British.
Streaming free public content is legal. A VPN only shifts your virtual location; it sidesteps no payment, because there is none. At most you bend the terms of service on region, which is not a crime. Surfshark also encrypts the connection, keeping your traffic private. In copyright terms this is nothing like the illegal streams people are warned about.
There is no native tvOS app, but you can AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad where the app works. Alternatively load Surfshark onto your router so the whole network, including a set-top box, shows a British IP. Then open the website in the TV browser and S4C Clic plays in 1080p just like at home in Wales.
The app focuses on streaming rather than offline downloads, so plan to watch with a connection. Keep Surfshark active on a UK server throughout, since the player rechecks your region during playback and a dropped tunnel triggers the geo-block again. On a stable UK line the live channel and archive both stream smoothly in 1080p.
The Welsh broadcaster holds UK-only rights for much of its drama and sport, so the library is fenced to British IP addresses. That is why a US connection sees an unavailable notice. Surfshark on a UK server presents a British IP, and the channel then serves the catalogue normally, the same logic that gates BBC iPlayer outside Britain.
