How to Watch BT TV outside the UK: VPN Guide 2026
On October 15, 2026, the status light on BT Broadband customers’ boxes turned from turquoise to blue, and EE TV became BT TV. The new app, released a day earlier, is built for Britain, so anyone who wants to watch BT TV outside the UK, whether from a hotel in Chicago or a rental in Florida, needs one extra step. Your package, price, channels and recordings all came through the switch untouched.
That step is a VPN with a server in the UK. It changes your virtual location, so you can watch your own channels and sports anywhere in the world, just like at home: live channels, Sky Sports through NOW, TNT Sports, Netflix and HBO Max, depending on your package. We recommend Surfshark, which takes a few minutes to set up before you fly. Switch it on, and the same guide you scroll through on the couch opens on your phone, tablet or laptop.

- Connect to a UK serverIn the VPN app, choose a location in the UK, such as London. For live games, pick a server with a light load so the stream stays smooth when the match gets tense.
- Open the BT TV appSign in with the BT account linked to your BT Broadband. You no longer need the EE TV app, since channels, sports packages and recording management now sit in the new guide.
- Dial in the pictureA stable connection gives you the sharpest stream. At home, the box shows TNT Sports Ultimate in 4K; on the road, cast from your phone to a TV with Chromecast or AirPlay.

Steer clear of free VPNs. Most of them actually collect and sell your data, lack proper security audits, and can even expose you to malware. They’re also useless for streaming. Platforms block them instantly, leaving you with more headaches than solutions. Stick to paid VPNs with verified audits, like Surfshark, if you want something that actually works.

What is BT TV
BT TV is back. Since October 15, 2026, the TV service for BT Broadband customers carries the BT TV name again, with a brand-new app for iPhone, iPad and Android that pulls live channels, TNT Sports, Sky Sports via NOW, Netflix and HBO Max into a single guide, depending on the package. At home, the service runs on the BT TV Box Pro or the BT TV Box Edge. Abroad, pair the new app with a VPN on a UK server to catch Sky Sports and TNT Sports matches.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before subscribing to BT TV.
From October 15, 2026, BT Broadband customers mostly see a new look: a fresh logo, a blue status light on the box instead of turquoise, and the BT TV Store in place of the EE TV Store. Package, price, channels and recordings stay put. The big practical change is the new app, out since October 14. Sign in with your BT account and the old EE TV app is no longer needed.
The app is built for Britain. A VPN with a server in the UK changes your virtual location, so you can watch your channels and sports anywhere in the world, just like at home. With Surfshark, you can unlock them in a few minutes: switch it on, pick a UK server and open the guide. The VPN is its own subscription and does not replace your BT contract.
You add TV to BT Broadband, and packages start at ≈ $20.05 a month on a 24-month contract. The lineup runs Entertainment, Entertainment Plus, Sport, Sport Plus and Full Works. In October 2026 there is a promo: Sport for 5 GBP and Sport Plus for 30 GBP a month for the first three months, after which the regular price applies.
No. The service runs through the BT Hub, so BT only sells it alongside BT Broadband, never on its own and never for free. If you are not a BT internet customer yet, you sign up for broadband first and then pick a TV package on top, depending on whether you lean toward movies and series or live sports.
iPhone and iPad on iOS 15.1 or later, Android 7 or later, Fire tablets, Fire TV and Samsung TVs. On a Windows PC, use the BT TV web player. You can stream on two devices at once and register up to four, and casting through Chromecast or AirPlay puts the picture on a hotel or vacation rental TV.
Sport brings TNT Sports, while Sport Plus and Full Works add Sky Sports through NOW on top. In the BT TV app, both sit in the same guide as your regular channels, so there is no jumping between apps. On the road, connect to a UK server and live games are right there on your phone or tablet.
Same technology, same lineup, different customers. BT TV is for BT Broadband customers, while EE TV carries on for EE Broadband customers, and each has its own app. If you pay BT for your internet, grab the new app; EE customers keep theirs.
Fubo is a US pay TV service, while BT TV is the British package you already pay for with BT Broadband. If your trip is temporary, there is no need to sign up for anything new: turn on Surfshark, connect to a UK server and keep watching the live channels, sports, Netflix or HBO Max in your own package. A local service makes more sense if you have moved to the US for good.
