Less than two years after its November 2024 debut at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, Prasar Bharati’s streaming service had passed 10 million registered users, a June 2026 government release said. Waves OTT is not available in the US, though: in our test, videos did not play outside India, and the terms say availability may vary by location. That leaves the Doordarshan archive, from Ramayan to Byomkesh Bakshi, out of reach, along with the 140-plus live TV channels and 24,000-plus titles counted in June.

What is Waves OTT
Waves OTT is the streaming service of Prasar Bharati, India’s public broadcaster, which oversees Doordarshan television and Akashvani, also known as All India Radio. Launched in November 2024, it pairs Doordarshan archive classics such as Hum Log, Byomkesh Bakshi, and Ramayan with live TV and radio, including 35 Doordarshan channels and Akashvani stations. The Gold plan is free. Paid Diamond and Platinum plans add downloads, and Platinum goes up to 4K. Sign-in uses a one-time code, sent by email if you don’t have an Indian mobile number. In our testing, content played only in India.

- Prasar Bharati is formed as India's state-owned public broadcaster, a statutory autonomous body created by an Act of Parliament and based in New Delhi. It oversees Doordarshan television and Akashvani, better known as All India Radio.
- Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant launches Waves OTT at the opening ceremony of the 55th International Film Festival of India, with 65 live channels and Doordarshan classics from day one.
- Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announces that the app passed one million downloads in its first month.
- A government update puts the app at more than 2 million downloads and 640,000 active users, with 1,856 films and 590 shows in the library.
- At a Doordarshan press conference in Panaji, officials say the service offers more than 70 live TV channels, including private networks B4U, SAB Group, and 9X Media, plus Konkani-language programming from DD Panaji.
- Replying in the Rajya Sabha, India's upper house, the government confirms that all 35 Doordarshan satellite channels are available on the platform.
- In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, India's lower house, the government reports that the platform has more than 8.4 million registered users.
- Not quite two years after launch, Waves OTT passes 10 million registered users, 24,000 titles, and 140 live TV channels. The government says it aims to reach 20 million registered users by March 2027.

Not quite. Platinum switches off ads for on-demand movies and shows, but section 3 of the terms warns that live sports or shows may still include advertising even on an ad-free plan. Diamond, despite being a paid tier, still carries ads, and its main extra is the ability to download. You can also rent individual titles pay-per-view, separately from any plan.
Prasar Bharati lists Android, iOS, Android TV, Google TV, Apple TV, Samsung and LG smart TVs, and Amazon Fire TV Stick, plus the website at wavespb.com. The apps are listed as WAVES PB in the App Store, WAVES PB TV on Apple TV, and simply WAVES on Google Play. On TV, you can also sign in with a QR code you scan on your phone.
Yes, use email. There is no password; the service sends a one-time code instead. Phone login works only with India’s +91 country code, and if you enter any other number, the site says mobile login is unavailable for that code and points you to email. The website won’t let you browse without signing in, so do this first.
The Doordarshan archive is the backbone: Hum Log, Chanakya, Byomkesh Bakshi, Fauji, Ramayan, Mahabharat, and Shaktimaan. Titles that arrived with the 2024 launch include Fauji 2.0, Jackson Halt, Guneet Monga Kapoor’s Kicking Balls, and Roll No. 52, a student film from Annapurna College. Documentaries from the NFDC archive and kids’ animation such as Chhota Bheem, Tenaliram, and Akbar Birbal round it out.
At times, but every example we can point to is a past season or tournament. They include the US Premier League Cricket tournament in November 2024, the Hockey India League in the 2024/25 season, the Global Indian Pravasi Kabaddi League in April 2025, and Germany’s DFB-Pokal and women’s Bundesliga in the 2025/26 season. For what is live now, check the app. National and religious events stream too, including the Republic Day parade, the prime minister’s Mann Ki Baat address, and the Shri Ram Lalla Aarti from Ayodhya.
Only on a paid plan. The help section is blunt about it: downloads are available solely for content under a subscription plan. Diamond and Platinum both include them, while free Gold does not. If offline viewing matters to you, Diamond is the cheapest way in.
