How to Watch Twitch from Anywhere: VPN Guide 2026
What started as a side channel on Justin.tv grew into the home of live game streaming, and Amazon bought the whole thing in 2011 under the name Twitch. League of Legends finals, Valorant ladders, endless Just Chatting and music or IRL streams sit side by side, all free and funded by ads. Yet watching Twitch from anywhere takes more than opening the app: China walled it off behind the Great Firewall, Turkey blocked it over gambling streams, and Russia keeps degrading the connection bit by bit.
When you travel or hit one of those barriers, Surfshark hands the feed back. Switch your location to an open country, say home or the US, and your channels, clips and chat load exactly as you left them. A VPN also encrypts traffic on hotel or airport Wi-Fi and helps with VODs muted for music rights. Picture on Twitch holds at 1080p, watching stays free and a channel sub is purely optional.

Who’s behind the service?
What is Twitch
Twitch is a live streaming platform owned by Amazon since 2014, free to watch and paid for by ads. The streams come from users themselves: gaming is the heart of it, alongside Just Chatting and IRL channels, music, and a huge esports scene covering League of Legends, Valorant, CS2 and Dota 2. If you want extras, there are channel subscriptions, Twitch Turbo for ad-free viewing, Bits and Prime Gaming. It runs on the web, phones, smart TVs and consoles, at up to 1080p60.

Company and history
- Justin Kan and his team launched Twitch.tv as the gaming spin-off of Justin.tv. Live game broadcasting quickly outgrew the parent site and created an entirely new category of entertainment online.
- Amazon bought the platform for roughly 970 million dollars, beating Google to the deal. The acquisition tied live streaming into Amazon's ecosystem and later brought perks such as Prime Gaming for subscribers.
- China placed Twitch behind its Great Firewall and the app vanished from the local App Store. Since then, viewers there can only reach Twitch through tools that change their virtual location.
- The company laid off about 35 percent of staff, roughly 500 people, as part of a push toward profitability. CEO Dan Clancy still pledged that supporting creators and the community would stay the priority.
- Turkish authorities, acting on the lottery administration, blocked the platform over betting and gambling streams. The block still stands in 2026 because the service has not made the demanded changes to wagering content.
- The platform shut down its South Korea operations over network fees up to ten times higher than elsewhere. It was a voluntary exit by the company, not a government ban, and local viewers lost official access.
- CEO Dan Clancy announced in an open letter that channel subscriptions and Bits would open to creators of every size from the moment they sign up. Ad revenue share, however, stayed limited to partners and affiliates.
- At TwitchCon in Rotterdam the company unveiled Dual Format for simultaneous horizontal and vertical streaming, 2K (1440p) streaming for partners and affiliates, and AI summaries of a running broadcast for viewers joining mid-stream.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our Twitch testing team · Updated June 17, 2026
- Watching Twitch is free for good, so only pay for Turbo (around $12 a month) if third-party ads on the channels you follow genuinely bother you.
- Link Amazon Prime to Twitch to claim one free channel sub every 30 days, but remember it never auto-renews: re-allocate it each month or you lose it.
- Traveling to Turkey or China where Twitch is blocked? Switch on Surfshark with a server back home and keep watching your channels without interruption.
- If you stream yourself, expect Audible Magic to mute roughly a six-minute block of your VOD on any licensed-music match, so stick to royalty-free tracks.
- Twitch runs on web, mobile, Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, Xbox and PlayStation, so you can move a stream from your monitor to the living-room TV in seconds.
