How to Watch Sky Sports from Anywhere: VPN Guide 2026
Premier League, Formula 1, England cricket, darts and well over a thousand EFL games a season all sit under one British roof. Since 1991, when the old Sports Channel was rebranded into the country’s first round-the-clock sports network, it has set the tone for how the UK follows live sport. The catch is the licence: broadcast rights stop at the borders of the UK and Ireland. Watching Sky Sports abroad therefore runs straight into a geo-block that locks you out of both live coverage and the archive the moment you step away, whether you pay through a Sky TV bundle or a rolling NOW Sports pass.
A VPN clears the hurdle. Connect to a British server, pick up a UK IP address, and the app behaves as if you never left London. A dependable Surfshark handles a demanding 4K stream without buffering, so no qualifying session or late winner slips past you. The service is licensed in only 2 countries, so without a British IP address you simply can’t reach the live action once you cross the border.

What is Sky Sports
Sky Sports is the sports arm of Comcast-owned Sky Group and has shaped the look and language of British sports broadcasting since 1990. Premier League is the flagship, but the portfolio also covers Formula 1, Test and T20 cricket, rugby union and league, golf and select tennis. There’s no standalone subscription; access comes either bundled inside a Sky TV contract or month-by-month through NOW Sports.

Company and history
- On 20 April 1991 the former Sports Channel was rebranded as Sky Sports, becoming Britain’s first round-the-clock sports channel, broadcast via the Astra satellite.
- A deal for the newly formed Premier League’s 1992/93 season made Sky Sports the home of English football and kicked off the era of pay-TV sport in the UK.
- On 12 October 2018 US giant Comcast acquired parent Sky plc and renamed it Sky Group, placing Sky Sports under one of the world’s largest media conglomerates.
- On 8 August 2024 Sky launched the streaming platform Sky Sports+, adding over a thousand EFL matches a season plus expanded tennis and other competitions.
- In February 2025 Sky extended its partnership with the PDC through 2030 in a record £125 million deal, outbidding Netflix for the darts rights.
- From the 2025/26 season Sky Sports shows at least 215 Premier League matches a year, a 70 percent jump in exclusive coverage, including the entire final round.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our Sky Sports testing team · Updated June 24, 2026
- Skip the Sky TV contract: get all 12 channels through a NOW Sports Month Membership at £34.99, cancellable anytime, or grab a 24-hour Day pass for £14.99.
- If you watch year-round, NOW's 12-month locked-in Sports deal undercuts the fully flexible monthly rate, just note you can't leave early and it renews at full price.
- Add Ultra Boost for 4K Ultra HD, HDR and Dolby Atmos sound, which also lets you stream Sky Sports on three devices at the same time.
- Use Multiview to watch four Premier League games on one screen at once, with the main match enlarged and the option to switch focus to any of them.
- Sky Sports is locked to the UK and Ireland with no EU portability, so abroad you'll need Surfshark connected to a UK server to reach the live streams.
