Bypassing DPI without native obfuscation
One thing that slightly disappointed us was the lack of native obfuscation for high-censorship areas like China. While it works well in the UAE, users in Beijing will find it difficult to connect. If you are in a restrictive country, you will need to rely on the SOCKS5 proxy or multi-hop features to bypass deep packet inspection, which is a bit more work than we would like for a modern VPN.Private Internet Access encryption toggles
One of the best things for power users is the ability to toggle between AES-128-GCM and AES-256-GCM. While the 256-bit version is the gold standard, we found that switching to 128-bit on older hardware provided a nice little speed boost without noticeably compromising security for daily browsing.Privacy & jurisdiction

Speed test results: Is PIA fast enough?
Stable performance across a massive global network.
Remote server performance on PIA
Things change a bit when you jump across the ocean. We saw remote speeds dip to 743 Mbps on the New York to London route. While an 11.2% speed overhead is very respectable, it is not quite as fast as the top-tier results we have seen from NordVPN. That said, unless you are on a very slow home connection, you are unlikely to notice any buffering during your daily routine.Unblocking Netflix and global streaming services
Tested across 122 streaming platforms in total.
UK and International content on Private Internet Access
Our tests in the UK were equally successful. We watched BBC iPlayer and ITVX without a hitch, and My5 worked on the first try. It is clear that their massive server count helps prevent the IP blacklisting that often happens with smaller providers. Even niche services like BritBox and STV Player cooperated during our 32 hours of testing.Global sports and 4K stability
Sports fans are also well-covered. We successfully streamed F1 TV and DAZN, which are notoriously difficult for VPNs to handle. If you are into US sports, Hulu and Disney+ were both perfectly stable, even when we pushed the resolution to 4K. What surprised us was how well it handled Apple TV+, which some competitors still struggle with.Device compatibility and app experience
Mobile vs Desktop experience
We found the Android and iOS apps to be surprisingly deep. Usually, mobile versions are stripped-back, but here you get a proper kill switch and protocol selection. The Linux GUI is also one of the best in the business-most VPNs just give you a command line, but PIA provides a full visual interface that actually works.Browser extensions and proxying
The browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox are essentially SOCKS5 proxies. They are great for a quick IP swap if you just want to change your location in the browser, but remember they do not encrypt your whole device’s traffic. For full security, you will always want to run the standalone app alongside your browser.Audit history and corporate transparency
Proven privacy through multiple third-party audits.
