How to Watch BBC iPlayer Abroad: Downloads, TV Licence and a UK Server
BBC iPlayer stops streaming the moment you leave the UK, even on holiday. Downloads made at home keep playing, your TV Licence still applies, and a VPN from our table with a UK server brings back live channels and new episodes.

BBC iPlayer doesn’t stream outside the UK, not even on holiday, because of rights agreements; people who live abroad can’t use it at all.
Downloads made in the UK play anywhere in the world on your phone or tablet, but you can’t download abroad.
Since Brexit, EU portability rules no longer cover UK travelers in the EEA, so Spain and France are blocked too.
A VPN from our table with a UK server brings back live channels and new episodes; your TV Licence (£180) still applies.
You land in Málaga, open the app to watch BBC iPlayer abroad, and nothing plays. That’s by design: iPlayer streams only inside the UK, and the BBC’s own help pages say the rule applies even on holiday.
The short answer: live channels and on-demand shows stop the moment you leave, but episodes you downloaded in the UK keep playing anywhere in the world. You keep paying for your TV Licence either way.
For everything you didn’t download, there’s a simple fix. A VPN from our table with a server in the UK gives you a UK connection again, so iPlayer plays the way it does on your couch at home.
Can you watch BBC iPlayer abroad?

The reason is rights. The BBC says you need to be in the UK to stream, download or watch its TV channels on iPlayer because of its rights agreements, and that shows can’t be streamed outside the UK, even on holiday. If you’ve moved abroad for good, the answer is stricter: iPlayer is funded by the UK TV Licence and restricted to UK residents.
Will that change? The BBC says it’s interested in letting UK license fee payers use iPlayer abroad, but there are “complex technical issues to resolve” and the outcome depends on future UK legislation. It gives no date.
How to watch BBC iPlayer abroad with a VPN
iPlayer decides where you are from your connection. The BBC uses geolocation based on the location of your internet provider, and every device online has an IP address. If iPlayer doesn’t recognize that address as a UK one, you get an error screen instead of your show. A VPN from the table routes you through a server in the UK, so iPlayer sees a UK address and plays live channels and new episodes wherever you are, just like at home.

Streaming service blocking your VPN? Just disconnect and hop onto a different server in the same country. Stick to the ones labeled “streaming” or “optimized” because they’re literally built for this.
The ranking in the table is based on StreamFix data. Our VPN ranking methodology explains how we build it.
Stream from a UK server in five steps
Pick a VPN from the table above and install it on your phone, tablet, laptop or streaming device.
Connect to a server in the United Kingdom.
Open iPlayer and sign in to your own BBC account. Without signing in, shows won’t play.
Choose a show or a live channel and press play.
Keep your TV Licence active at home. The VPN only changes your virtual location; it doesn’t replace your license or your account.
Yes, and it’s the BBC’s own travel tip. Download a program in the UK and you can watch it anywhere in the world, offline too. They sit in the Downloads menu of the BBC iPlayer app on your phone or tablet. Plan them before you head to the airport:
Download in the UK only. You can’t download anything once you’re abroad.
Phone or tablet only. There’s no download option on PC, Mac or TV devices.
One episode at a time. You can’t save a whole series at once, so a Doctor Who (2005 to 2022) binge from series 1 means saving each episode separately.
Open the app before you leave. If the app updates itself after you download, open it while you’re still in the UK, or your downloads may not play abroad.
Same device only. A download plays only on the device you saved it to.
How long a download stays playable
A download expires at the same moment as the online version. If a show is available for 30 days, you have until the end of those 30 days. Much of iPlayer stays up for 30 days after broadcast and many shows for a year or more, while news bulletins may last only 24 hours and some sport and films have shorter windows.
Football is the tightest. Match of the Day arrives at midnight after broadcast and stays for seven days or until the next episode airs, whichever comes first, because of the BBC’s rights deal with the Premier League. Strictly Come Dancing lasts longer: series 24 is on iPlayer with the week 5 results up, and episodes are listed for over a year. For live matches on the road, see our guide to using a VPN to watch football abroad.
Do you need a TV Licence to watch abroad?
Yes. The BBC says a valid TV Licence is required to watch or download any programs on iPlayer, on a TV or any device, including a phone, tablet or computer. According to GOV.UK, a TV Licence costs £180. Away from home inside the UK, the license at your home address covers you as long as the device you’re using isn’t plugged in.
A VPN doesn’t change any of that. It moves your virtual location to the UK, while your license and your BBC account stay exactly as they are. You keep paying for the license as usual.
Account and postcode rules
You also need a BBC account, because iPlayer won’t play anything until you sign in. The account asks for the postcode of your home and accepts only postcodes in the UK, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Jersey. Use your real home postcode.
Why EU portability rules don’t cover UK travelers
Plenty of UK travelers expect EU portability rules to carry their shows to Spain or France. They don’t. According to GOV.UK guidance published on January 30, 2021, the EU Portability Regulation no longer applies to travel between the UK and the EEA, and it has been revoked in the UK. Online content providers aren’t required to give UK customers who are temporarily in an EEA country the content they normally get at home.
So a week in Barcelona or the Algarve works like a week in New York: iPlayer won’t stream, but your downloads will. A VPN from the table with a UK server is how you keep up with live channels in Europe. Our page on how to watch UK TV abroad covers the other British channels as well.
What still works outside the UK
Some BBC services travel with you without any VPN. The BBC lists them for people traveling outside the UK and for people who live abroad. Some content may still be unavailable outside the UK because of rights agreements, and some is offered in selected countries only.
Radio, podcasts and news
BBC Sounds through the Sounds app, when you’re traveling.
BBC radio through the BBC.com app or BBC Audio, if you live outside the UK.

BBC News.
Sport and YouTube channels
BBC Sport is on the list too, and so are the BBC Three and BBC News channels on YouTube. For full episodes and live BBC TV channels on iPlayer, you’re back to downloads or a UK server. Our BBC iPlayer streaming guide covers the apps and devices in more detail.
