Do I need a VPN to watch?

No. Outside Australia the stream simply plays, so NordVPN is not what gets you in. It matters in two narrow cases. Can I download matches for offline viewing?

You can, and in a European or American time zone it is the feature that makes Watch AFL usable. A full match downloads to a phone or tablet and plays without a connection. Combine it with the spoiler free setting, which hides scores and ladders, and a Saturday night game in Melbourne survives until your Sunday morning.

How is this different from the AFL Live app?

The AFL Live Official App comes from Telstra and is aimed at Australian users, so it is not the same product at all. What you are looking at here is the league’s export service, built with FOX SPORTS Australia and its StreamCo subsidiary. Kayo Sports, Binge and Foxtel are domestic too and stay out of reach abroad.

Who owns Watch AFL now?

The service is run by the AFL together with FOX SPORTS Australia. Fox Sports sits inside Foxtel Group, and Foxtel Group was bought by DAZN in a deal that closed on April 2, 2025. So the ultimate owner is a global sports streamer, although the app kept its own branding, its own apps and its own checkout.

Is there an alternative for viewers in the US?

Partly. Fox Soccer Plus carries a selection of matches, with more on FS1 and FS2, but that route needs a cable or streaming package that includes those channels and it still leaves gaps across the home and away season. DAZN owns the parent group yet keeps this product separate from its American lineup. For every match in one place, Watch AFL stays the direct route.

How many devices can watch at once?

One household is the assumption behind a Watch AFL account. There is a browser player plus apps for iOS, Android and Apple TV, and Chromecast or AirPlay throws the picture onto a television. Simultaneous streams are capped, so an account will not stretch across a whole supporters club. Playback position follows you between devices, which helps when a match starts on a commute.

How do I cancel Watch AFL?

Cancel where you paid. Sign ups made on the website are managed in account settings, where you switch off automatic renewal. Purchases made through the App Store or Google Play are cancelled in that store’s subscription list instead. February 2017Fox Sports launches Watch AFL in February 2017 as an export only product of the AFL. It runs free until March 23, 2017, then switches to paid subscriptions for viewers outside Australia.
September 2022In September 2022 the AFL signs a record broadcast deal covering the 2025 to 2031 seasons. Seven, Foxtel and Telstra pay A$4.5 billion, the largest sports rights agreement in Australian history.
March 2024Version 1.9.0 arrives in March 2024 with a redesigned interface and picture in picture, so following two matches at once no longer needs a second device.
December 2024News Corp and Telstra agree in December 2024 to sell Foxtel Group to DAZN at an enterprise value of US$2.2 billion, roughly A$3.4 billion, subject to regulatory approval.
April 2, 2025DAZN closes the deal on April 2, 2025. Foxtel, Kayo, Binge and Fox Sports Australia change hands, which puts the operator of Watch AFL under a global sports streamer for the first time.
September 27, 2025Brisbane Lions beat Geelong by 47 points in the Grand Final at the MCG on September 27, 2025, taking back to back flags and closing the first season played under the new rights deal.
November 29, 2025North Melbourne goes through the tenth AFLW season unbeaten and wins the Grand Final at Ikon Park on November 29, 2025, beating Brisbane by 40 points. The women’s competition sits inside the same subscription.
March 5, 2026The 2026 season opens at the SCG on March 5 with Sydney Swans against Carlton. For the first time Opening Round includes a Victorian fixture, St Kilda versus Collingwood at the MCG.
