How to Watch AFL from Anywhere: Expat Guide 2026
In February 2017 the AFL and Fox Sports did something unusual for an Australian league: they built a streaming product that deliberately refuses to work at home. Watch AFL is the official international home of Australian rules football, run by the league together with FOX SPORTS Australia and its StreamCo subsidiary, and every session is checked against where you actually are. Australian viewers already get a slate of matches free on 7plus and the rest on Kayo Sports, so the export version stays switched off inside the country. In 25 markets it opens normally, with no workaround required.
The subscription covers every Toyota AFL Premiership Season match and the full Finals Series, the NAB AFL Women’s Competition, the pre-season Community Series and the FOX FOOTY channel with its news and analysis shows. Play runs without ad breaks, matches download for offline viewing, and a spoiler free mode hides scores until you press play. Streams top out at 1080p.

Takes about 2 minutes. Works on your phone, tablet, TV, PC, or laptop.
- Confirm you are outside AustraliaPlayback reads your IP address and an Australian connection is turned away by design, even though the sign-up itself goes through, because at home the same matches sit on Foxtel and Kayo Sports.Travelling in Australia with an account you already pay for? You would need NordVPN on a server outside the country, the reverse of the usual advice.
- Take out a subscriptionYou register on the Watch AFL site or inside the app and pick monthly or annual billing. The annual option works out cheaper per round, and a weekly pass covers a single big weekend.
- Install the appThere is a browser player plus apps for iOS, Android and Apple TV. Chromecast and AirPlay push the picture onto a television.
- Start watchingQuality reaches 1080p. Downloads keep matches available on a plane, and spoiler free mode hides the score until you hit play.

Company and history
- Fox Sports launches Watch AFL in February 2017 as an export only product of the AFL. It runs free until March 23, 2017, then switches to paid subscriptions for viewers outside Australia.
- In September 2022 the AFL signs a record broadcast deal covering the 2025 to 2031 seasons. Seven, Foxtel and Telstra pay A$4.5 billion, the largest sports rights agreement in Australian history.
- Version 1.9.0 arrives in March 2024 with a redesigned interface and picture in picture, so following two matches at once no longer needs a second device.
- News Corp and Telstra agree in December 2024 to sell Foxtel Group to DAZN at an enterprise value of US$2.2 billion, roughly A$3.4 billion, subject to regulatory approval.
- DAZN closes the deal on April 2, 2025. Foxtel, Kayo, Binge and Fox Sports Australia change hands, which puts the operator of Watch AFL under a global sports streamer for the first time.
- Brisbane Lions beat Geelong by 47 points in the Grand Final at the MCG on September 27, 2025, taking back to back flags and closing the first season played under the new rights deal.
- North Melbourne goes through the tenth AFLW season unbeaten and wins the Grand Final at Ikon Park on November 29, 2025, beating Brisbane by 40 points. The women’s competition sits inside the same subscription.
- The 2026 season opens at the SCG on March 5 with Sydney Swans against Carlton. For the first time Opening Round includes a Victorian fixture, St Kilda versus Collingwood at the MCG.
- Version 1.9.6 lands on April 28, 2026 with minor interface fixes, mid season. App Store ratings stay low, with users pointing at stream stability rather than the catalog.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our Watch AFL testing team · Updated August 3, 2026
- The 229 AUD annual plan costs about what five monthly charges do, so it wins from mid-season; the 24 AUD weekly pass only pays off for a single round.
- Do not cancel after the Grand Final, because the subscription also carries the 24/7 Fox Footy channel plus Brownlow Medal and National Draft coverage.
- Watch AFL works in reverse: it plays only outside Australia, so point NordVPN at a server in the country you are actually in, never an Australian one.
- There is no smart TV app and TV browsers are unsupported, so cast with Chromecast or AirPlay, or use the Apple TV app. The native apps cover phone, tablet and computer only.
- When a bounce-down lands at 4am your time, switch on spoiler-free mode to hide the scores and download the replay for offline viewing.
