How to Watch Tirol TV outside Austria: VPN Guide 2026
This Tyrolean broadcaster first went on air from Innsbruck back in 1997, the very first regional channel in Austria built for satellite reception. These days it sits inside Moser Holding, the publisher behind the Tiroler Tageszeitung daily, now being acquired by the Russmedia group in a 2026 deal still awaiting clearance, and its calling card is the infotainment magazine Tirol Today, a blend of regional politics, sport, culture and on-the-ground reporting from the valleys. Tirol TV runs completely free, leans on advertising, and is officially carried in just 1 market, Austria. The catch is technical rather than commercial.
The open livestream at tiroltoday.at carries no geo-block, so it loads fine from outside Austria, tested from a Czech connection in June 2026. Where you might hit a wall is the cable feeds and the R9digital app, which expect an Austrian IP. That is where ExpressVPN earns its keep: connect to a server in Austria, pick up a local address, and watch live in 720p while you travel.

What is Tirol TV
Tirol TV is a Tyrolean infotainment channel based in Innsbruck, Austria, best known for its flagship magazine show Tirol Today. Since 2023 it has been owned by Moser Holding AG, the publisher of the Tiroler Tageszeitung, and it belongs to the R9 Österreich alliance of regional broadcasters. Founded in 1997, it relaunched in 2014 after an insolvency. The channel is free and ad-supported, mixing infotainment around politics, society, sport and culture with reportages and regional news. You can stream it for free at tiroltoday.at and through the R9digital app.
Company and history
- In 1997 the channel went live from Innsbruck as Austria's very first regional broadcaster capable of satellite reception, well ahead of the regional TV boom.
- In December 2007 the station moved onto the Astra digital satellite platform, giving Tyroleans across Austria a sharper picture and noticeably wider reach.
- In autumn 2013 the production company slid into insolvency. The lights went dark only briefly; a restructured company with new ownership was formed the same year.
- On 7 January 2014 the relaunch arrived with the shows Tirol20 and 90Sekunden. By March the schedule had grown into a 60-minute daily format with editions from six districts.
- In April 2023 Moser Holding, publisher of the Tiroler Tageszeitung, acquired Tirol TV. The newsroom moved to Museumstraße and gained a new multimedia studio.
- In July 2024 seasoned presenter Hubert Trenkwalder became programme director, vowing to steer the Tyrolean infotainment lineup down fresh, more innovative paths.
- In January 2025 Trenkwalder stepped up to managing director and Tirol TV launched the weekly wrap-ups Die Woche (Monday to Friday from 18:00) and Am Wochenende.
- On 23 October 2025 the R9 alliance, which Tirol TV belongs to, added two new formats, Die Helfer*innen Österreichs and Rundumadum, available on demand via R9digital.
- On 3 June 2026 the Russmedia group announced it would take over 77% of Moser Holding, owner of Tirol TV and the Tiroler Tageszeitung; bank BTV keeps 23%, the founding Moser family exits and the deal awaits antitrust clearance.
