What is WT1
WT1 is a free regional channel for Wels and Wels-Land in Upper Austria. It went on air back in 1996, launched by Wolf Dieter Holzhey, and is often described as Austria’s first regional TV station. Its sister channel is LT1. The programme runs as a 24/7 linear loop on cable and over free DVB-T2 through simpliTV, with a login-gated Mediathek on wt1.at and a presence on YouTube. Expect regional news, magazines, reports, sport and culture, all in up to 720p.

Major changes
- Wolf Dieter Holzhey, then a young man running a Wels advertising agency, won the cable broadcasting licence for Wels and the Wels-Land district and launched WT1 as what is widely regarded as Austria’s first regional television station.
- Holzhey renamed the Linz station TV3 to LT1 and switched it from a weekly to a daily news format, giving WT1 a sister channel for neighbouring Linz within his group.
- The operating company WT 1 Privatfernsehen GmbH (FN 373665 h), based in Wels, was formed and has run the WT1 broadcast under a single legal entity ever since.
- WT1 went through a relaunch with a new studio and graphics and doubled down on digital: the magazine has since gone out twice a week and pushed harder toward its own online Mediathek at wt1.at.
- The station modernised its brand and website and introduced the Mein WT1 account, giving registered viewers unlimited Mediathek playback, resume-watching and a personal watchlist.
- By mid-2026 WT1 was still airing its new magazine on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 pm, looping it between editions on LIWEST, A1 TV and Magenta cable and the simpliTV aerial, and topping up its free Mediathek.
