TG4 Player is the streaming and catch-up service of TG4, Ireland’s Irish language public broadcaster, based in Baile na hAbhann, County Galway. It is free, with no subscription, and an account stays optional, though signing in unlocks the archive and cuts the ads. Unlike most public service players, it is not walled off to Ireland: roughly three quarters of the catalogue, including Ros na Rún, Nuacht TG4 and the archive, plays worldwide, so you do not need a VPN; imported drama and some sport stay locked. It runs on the web, on mobile and on smart TV apps.

- Ireland launched its first national Irish-language channel, Teilifís na Gaeilge, on 31 October 1996. The studios sat in Baile na hAbhann, a Connemara Gaeltacht village of a few hundred people.
- In September 1999 Teilifís na Gaeilge became TG4. The rebrand brought the motto Súil Eile, another eye, which the broadcaster still puts on screen today.
- Cúla4, the first dedicated Irish-language children’s channel, went on air on 8 September 2023. It runs fourteen hours a day and was made possible by a 7.3 million euro funding increase.
- In April 2025 Deirdre Ní Choistín took over as director general, the first woman to lead the broadcaster. She succeeded Alan Esslemont, who had run TG4 since 2016.
- On 17 April 2025 TG4 became the exclusive free-to-air broadcaster of the United Rugby Championship in Ireland. The four-season deal runs to 2029 and guarantees at least twenty-six matches a year.
- From 16 September 2025 new episodes of Ros na Rún land on TG4 Player a day before broadcast. The soap’s thirtieth season became the channel’s first digital-first release.
- Ireland’s Budget 2026, announced on 7 October 2025, added 5.4 million euro to the grant and lifted state funding to 65.4 million. The money targets children’s output and news.
- On 16 October 2025 the service added five imported drama boxsets from New Zealand, Canada, Bosnia, Sweden and the Netherlands, widening the autumn drama slate.
- Figures published on 21 January 2026 showed a fifth straight year of audience growth and a 28 percent rise in streams during 2025. Cork against Limerick in hurling set a record at 172,000 streams.
- On 12 June 2026 the broadcaster extended its Tour de France rights to 2030. It has covered the race in Irish since 2005 and carries every stage live and free-to-air on TG4, TG4 Player and the TG4 app.
