How to Watch STVR :24 from Anywhere: VPN Guide 2026
When the war in Ukraine broke out in February 2022, Slovakia’s public broadcaster spun up a rolling news channel called :24 almost overnight as an emergency measure. The stopgap grew into a permanent newsroom that, since 1 July 2025, broadcasts under the new STVR banner (Slovenská televízia a rozhlas) after the old RTVS was dissolved. Watching STVR :24 abroad is easier than you might expect: live news is not rights-locked the way drama and sport are, so the stream runs openly in 193 countries and Slovaks overseas can follow it with no workaround.
On this channel a VPN is an insurance policy, not an unlock. A reliable VPN earns its keep when a corporate or hotel network blocks the feed, when you are somewhere that censors public-service news, or when you want a Slovak server for the on-demand archive, which, unlike the live broadcast, does carry geo-restrictions. On top of NordVPN, the website and apps push resolution up to 1080p, with no account or paywall first.

Who’s behind the service?
What is STVR :24
STVR :24 is Slovakia’s public-service rolling news channel, on air since 2022 with round-the-clock live broadcasts and in-depth analysis. Free to watch online, it gives you continuous coverage of Slovak and Central European affairs alongside a broad archive of documentaries and current-affairs programmes focused on regional politics and society.

Company and history
- The broadcaster launched the :24 news channel, then still called RTVS :24, as an immediate response to the outbreak of war in Ukraine. It began as an emergency rolling-news project.
- A new law dissolved RTVS and created Slovenská televízia a rozhlas (STVR). The news channel was accordingly renamed from RTVS :24 to STVR :24.
- On 16 September the newsroom got a major overhaul: longer news blocks during the day, a revamped morning format, the new Aktuálne :24 strand and the evening Svet :24 covering world affairs.
- STVR officially unveiled a new logo built around the letter S, dropping the traditional tricolour. It kicked off a fresh visual identity whose channel-wide rollout is set to take about eighteen months.
- The :24 news channel marked four years on air. The 2022 emergency stopgap had grown into a stable, everyday part of Slovak public-service news coverage.

5 tips from our STVR :24 testing team · Updated June 20, 2026
- STVR :24 is public-service and totally free with no plans or trials, so just open stvr.sk/televizia/live-24 and the rolling news stream starts without any sign-up.
- The :24 live stream is geo-locked to Slovakia, so abroad you hit a rights notice instead of video: connect through NordVPN to a Slovak server and the broadcast loads normally.
- Skip the endless live feed and use the STVR archive to pull a specific Sobotné dialógy or O 5 minút 12 debate, then watch just the discussion you came for.
- Install the new STVR app (formerly the RTVS app): it carries the live :24 channel plus the on-demand archive, so you can catch the 7:00 morning bulletin on your commute.
- Watching :24 over the air requires a DVB-T2 tuner with HEVC support, so an older set-top box simply won't find the channel.
