How to Watch ORF III outside Austria: VPN Guide 2026
When the tourism channel TW1 went dark in 2011, Austria’s public broadcaster handed its frequency to a brand-new culture channel. ORF III is the arts and information service of ORF, mixing opera, theatre, concerts, cabaret, contemporary-history documentaries, science and Austrian film. It streams free of charge through ORF ON at on.orf.at, paid for by the Austrian household levy rather than ads or a subscription, and many broadcasts go out live straight from Vienna’s stages.
The catch is geoblocking. ORF III holds broadcast rights for Austria only, so the moment you load a clip from outside the country you hit a notice that the video is available in Austria only. ExpressVPN fixes that: it swaps your IP for a Vienna address and the whole library opens as if you were sitting at home. Playback runs in 1080p across the browser, mobile, tablet and smart-TV apps, wherever you happen to be.

Who’s behind the service?
What is ORF III
ORF III is the public-service culture and information channel of Austria’s national broadcaster, on air since autumn 2011 on the frequency once held by TW1. It bills itself as the country’s largest cultural stage, mixing opera, theatre, concerts and cabaret with documentaries on contemporary history, science and Austrian cinema, plus discussion and news formats. You can stream it for free through ORF ON, though it is available only within Austria.
Company and history
- The channel went on air on 26 October 2011 at 14:00, taking over the frequency of the shuttered tourism channel TW1. ORF built its profile around culture, history, science and information.
- The station expanded its news and discussion line-up to strengthen its role as the information channel alongside the main ORF 1 and ORF 2 networks.
- ORF III marked ten years on air. As the youngest station in the ORF fleet it set itself the goal of regularly reaching a million viewers and deepening its cultural focus.
- From January 2024 the GIS fee gave way to the new ORF-Beitrag of 15.30 euros a month, frozen until 2029. This household levy keeps funding the public channel without ads or a subscription.
- In May 2024 the ORF ON platform replaced the old TVthek. It brought a fresh design, longer catch-up windows and an archive where the channel streams in HD for Austrian IP addresses only.
- The year 2025 revolved around the Johann Strauss bicentenary. The channel opened with the operetta Die Fledermaus and then lined up concerts, portraits and documentaries throughout the year.
- For its fifteenth year ORF III unveiled its 2026 slate with more than 2,300 hours of original output: live broadcasts from opera and theatre, cabaret and documentaries on contemporary history and science.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our ORF III testing team · Updated June 22, 2026
- ORF III isn't a separate subscription: it streams free on ORF ON, bankrolled by Austria's household levy (ORF-Beitrag, around 15.30 EUR a month), so don't go hunting for a paywall.
- Catch-up titles usually sit in ORF ON for just 7 days, so watch that opera broadcast or a "zeit.geschichte" history episode within a week of airing.
- Outside Austria most content is geo-blocked, so set an Austrian IP with ExpressVPN and the live opera and Simpl cabaret streams play as if you were in Vienna.
- Switch on subtitles (UT) and audio description in the player; ORF III even runs AI-assisted subtitles on its live cultural broadcasts.
- For 2026, ORF III leans into live opera (Tosca from the St. Margarethen quarry on July 15) and Vienna ESC culture programming, so flag those live slots in the schedule.
