How to Watch ORF KIDS outside Austria: VPN Guide 2026
Austria’s public broadcaster ORF switched on a standalone kids streaming service on January 1, 2024, running a round-the-clock channel that stays ad-free and violence-free. The lineup features originals like Demokratino, a playful take on politics, Kling Klang with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the news format ZIB KiDS presented in sign language. The long-running OKIDOKI block became ORF KiDS on April 1, 2026. The service ORF KIDS is locked to Austria, so it stays dark from a normal US connection unless you change where the site thinks you are sitting.
Because the catalog is built around Austrian dubbing and homegrown productions, ORF never licensed any of it for the States, and the player turns visitors away the moment it spots a US address. A NordVPN server in Austria hands you a local IP address, and the page then loads exactly as it would for a family in Vienna, live channel and on-demand shows included. Everything streams smoothly in 1080p, and the service itself costs nothing on top of the VPN.

Quick answer
Is ORF KIDS available outside Austria?
Not on a normal American connection: the player checks your IP and blocks anything outside Austria. The fix is quick. Fire up NordVPN, pick an Austrian server, and you pick up a local IP that satisfies the geo-check. The site then opens in full, live stream and on-demand shows alike. Since the service is free, there is no subscription to buy on top.

How-to
How to Unblock ORF KIDS with a VPN
Takes about 2 minutes. Works on your phone, tablet, TV, PC, or laptop.

Pick a reliable VPN
Grab NordVPN from $2.99 a month. It runs fast Austrian servers that hold up for live playback.
A yearly plan works out cheaper than paying month to month.
2
Connect to a server in Austria
Choose an Austrian location in the app. You get a local IP, and the geo-block stops flagging you as out of country.
3
Open ORF KIDS
Head to kids.ORF.at or install the official app. The catalog loads the way Austrian households see it.
4
Start watching
Pick a show or the live channel and push the quality up to 1080p. Kids can settle in for a whole afternoon.

⚠️
Steer clear of free VPNs. Most of them actually collect and sell your data, lack proper security audits, and can even expose you to malware. They’re also useless for streaming. Platforms block them instantly, leaving you with more headaches than solutions. Stick to paid VPNs with verified audits, like NordVPN, if you want something that actually works.

What is ORF KIDS
ORF KIDS is the free, ad-free children’s streaming service from Austria’s public broadcaster ORF, available at kids.orf.at. It launched on 1 January 2024 and got its own app the following October. There is a round-the-clock kids livestream alongside plenty on demand: original Austrian shows, cartoons, programmes about nature, knowledge and creativity, and a children’s news bulletin, ZIB KiDS, which is offered in sign language. It is aimed at roughly ages 3 to 14, in a safe, violence-free, age-rated and barrier-free space. Everything is free and you do not even need to log in, because the service is funded by the ORF household fee rather than advertising, so there are no ads at all. You can watch on the web, on dedicated iOS and Android apps, and through the ORF ON apps on Fire TV and on Samsung and LG smart TVs, in German at up to roughly Full HD. A few licensed titles are restricted to Austria while ORF’s own productions travel more widely, so from abroad you will want a VPN with an Austrian server to set your virtual location there.

Company and history
Major changes
In December 2023 ORF announced its standalone children’s channel, confirming a round-the-clock, ad-free and violence-free service aimed at kids aged three to fourteen.
On January 1, 2024 at 6 a.m. the linear 24-hour channel and an on-demand library went live on kids.ORF.at, opening with originals such as YEAH! and Klimakrach.
In May 2024 the new ORF ON platform permanently replaced the old TVthek, folding the kids offering into the broadcaster’s single streaming front end.
On October 23, 2024 a dedicated ORF KIDS app launched for iOS and Android, bundling the live channel, series and originals into one safe space for children.
In summer 2025 the service rolled out a holiday schedule with a beefed-up slate of shows and series, giving Austrian children plenty to watch through the warm months.
From October 2025 more than twenty new formats arrived, among them Demokratino on politics, the castle series Burggeheimnisse and the edutainment show Linselotte touring Austria.
On April 1, 2026 ORF unified children’s streaming and linear TV under one ORF KiDS brand on ORF 1. The OKIDOKI block ended on March 31, new shows like KiDS CLUB launched and ZIB Zack Mini became ZIB KiDS.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before subscribing to ORF KIDS.
Nothing at all. It is a public-service offering from Austria’s ORF, funded by license fees, so the whole thing is free and ad-free on top. The only cost you might face is a NordVPN subscription to clear the geo-block from the US. There is no account fee or paywall on the content itself, which makes it an easy pick for families.
We would steer you away from it. Free VPNs tend to have few servers, slow speeds and often no Austrian node at all, so the live channel stutters. A paid NordVPN holds a steady speed and keeps the Austrian IP stable through a long session. For kids’ streaming, reliability beats saving a couple of dollars every time.
The library is Austrian, so shows run in German, often in an Austrian dialect with local dubbing. Do not expect English audio or subtitles across the board. For children learning German, though, it is a safe, gentle listening source. Switching NordVPN servers does not change that, since the language stays German regardless of where you connect.
Yes, that is the whole point. The service is ad-free, violence-free and barrier-free, with content curated for ages three to fourteen. It even carries a news format, ZIB KiDS, offered in sign language. Parents can leave kids to browse on their own without worrying about pushy ads or unsuitable clips slipping through.
Open kids.ORF.at in a browser or install the official ORF KIDS app for iOS and Android. It also lives inside the wider ORF ON interface on smart TVs. If you are watching from the US, switch on NordVPN with an Austrian server first on every device, otherwise the geo-block keeps the content out of reach.
Because ORF only holds the rights for Austria, and the site checks your IP address. From a US address it simply refuses to load. Connect through NordVPN to an Austrian server and you pick up a local IP, so the site treats you as a viewer in Vienna. The catalog then opens completely normally, live channel included.
Today, yes. OKIDOKI was ORF’s long-running kids block, rebranded to ORF KiDS on April 1, 2026. The streaming app and the ORF 1 block now share the single ORF KIDS brand, so it is one and the same offering. Through NordVPN you reach it just as easily from outside Austria.
The content is essentially the same; the app just adds smoother controls for tablet and phone plus a child-friendly layout. The kids.ORF.at site, in turn, suits a computer or smart TV. Whichever you pick, from the US you need NordVPN on an Austrian server, or neither one will load the catalog.
Yes. You can stream ORF KIDS from the app or browser and cast to a TV, or open ORF ON directly on a smart TV. Picture quality runs up to 1080p. Just make sure the device or your router is routing through NordVPN on an Austrian server, since the geo-check applies to the TV the same way it does to a phone.
