- Canal RCN first appeared on 23 March 1967 as the television arm of the radio network RCN Radio (Radio Cadena Nacional), supplying shows to Colombia's state channels for years before it won a frequency of its own.
- In 1973 the businessman Carlos Ardila Lulle bought RCN Radio and its television subsidiary, folding them into his Organizacion Ardila Lulle, which still owns the channel today.
- After a new broadcasting law, the channel went live on 10 July 1998 as one of Colombia's two private national networks, launching right alongside its rival Caracol Television.
- The 1999 premiere of the telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea turned Canal RCN into a global phenomenon, spawning remakes in more than twenty countries and a Guinness World Record.
- In January 2025 the broadcaster announced a new free app that began streaming the reality show La Casa de los Famosos Colombia around the clock, 24 hours a day.
- MasterChef Celebrity Colombia returned on 18 June 2025 with an international jury and the after-show Manos arriba, with full episodes going live and into the Canal RCN archive.
- On 12 January 2026 the third season of La Casa de los Famosos Colombia launched with 23 contestants, and streaming became a built-in part of the storytelling.
