How to Watch ORF TVthek outside Austria: VPN Guide 2026
Austria’s public broadcaster rebuilt its catch-up service in 2024, swapping the old TVthek portal for a fresh platform called ORF ON that keeps shows online for months instead of a week. You get live feeds of ORF 1, ORF 2, ORF III and the sports channel ORF Sport +, the Zeit im Bild news bulletins, full Alpine Ski World Cup coverage and the round-the-clock kids channel ORF KIDS. ORF TVthek is locked to Austria, so from your country it simply won’t load and you hit the message “Nur in Österreich verfügbar,” because the rights, paid for by the ORF-Beitrag licence fee, stop at the Austrian border.
The fix is quick. Connect through Surfshark to a server in Austria, pick up a Vienna IP address and the portal lets you straight in, no sign-up required. Everything streams free of charge, so the VPN is your only cost. You can watch in up to 1080p on the web, your phone or a smart TV.

Who’s behind the service?
What is ORF TVthek
ORF ON is the streaming service of Austria’s public broadcaster ORF, the platform that replaced ORF TVthek in May 2024 with longer availability windows. It carries live feeds of ORF 1, ORF 2, ORF III, ORF Sport + and the children’s channel ORF KIDS, the Zeit im Bild news bulletins, full coverage of the Alpine Ski World Cup and a deep catalogue of Austrian documentaries and drama. Most shows stay online for up to six months. Funded by the ORF-Beitrag licence fee, free to use and limited to Austria.

Company and history
- ORF launched the TVthek catch-up portal, the first large streaming service of Austria’s public broadcaster, offering live channels and on-demand programmes.
- Under the new ORF law banning paid services, the streaming portals Flimmit and fidelio shut down on 30 November 2023. Subscribers received a proportional refund.
- A new ORF law scrapped the seven-day availability limit, letting programmes stay online for weeks or months. On 1 January 2024 the standalone children’s channel ORF KIDS also launched.
- ORF ON definitively replaced TVthek as the main streaming portal, bringing a new design, longer availability windows and a unified home for all ORF channels.
- Director general Roland Weißmann announced to the Publikumsrat a 28-million-euro investment in premium content for 2025 as part of ORF’s streaming and fiction offensive.
- ORF ON posted a record month with 19.5 million net views and 580 million minutes watched, confirming its place as Austria’s most-used streaming platform.
- Powered by the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, ORF ON had its all-time record month: 20.7 million net views and 732 million minutes watched, the highest since measurement began.
