The president and the vice president are plotting to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon, and the two people most likely to stop them are the vice president’s wife and the president’s husband. That’s where The Diplomat season 4 picks up when it arrives on Netflix on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with all eight episodes at once.
Allison Janney walks back into the Oval Office as President Grace Penn with a brand-new Emmy on her shelf, and this time she’s a series regular. Below you’ll find the expected release time for your city, how the new season stacks up against the first three, a spoiler-flagged refresher on that season 3 finale and what to do if the premiere catches you away from home.
The Diplomat season 4 release date and time: where to watch
Season 4 streams on Netflix, and only on Netflix, starting Thursday, October 15, 2026. Netflix hasn’t announced a release time yet. Seasons 1 and 3 both went live at 7:00 UTC, though, and if season 4 follows suit, this is when it unlocks where you are.
Where you are | When to expect season 4 |
|---|
New York (ET) | 3 a.m., Thursday, October 15 |
Los Angeles (PT) | Midnight, Thursday, October 15 (late Wednesday night) |
Toronto (ET) | 3 a.m., Thursday, October 15 |
London and Dublin | 8 a.m., Thursday, October 15 |
Sydney (AEDT) | 6 p.m., Thursday, October 15 |
These times are based on when the previous seasons dropped. Netflix hasn’t confirmed the hour for season 4 (as of October 9, 2026), so treat them as the most likely slot, not a promise.
There’s no weekly wait. All eight episodes land together, which makes this one a weekend binge for most of us and a long Thursday evening in Sydney. According to JustWatch, Netflix carries the show in the US, the UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia, so your regular subscription is all you need at home. If you’re not signed up yet, our Netflix streaming guide is a good place to start.
How many episodes are in season 4, and do they drop all at once?
Eight, and yes. TVLine reports that all eight episodes arrive on October 15, and TMDB lists the same eight with that date. Netflix’s own announcements mention only the premiere date, but a full-season drop is nothing new for this show: season 2 also landed in one go.
Season | Premiere and episodes |
|---|
Season 1 | April 20, 2023, 8 episodes |
Season 2 | October 31, 2024, 6 episodes |
Season 3 | October 16, 2025, 8 episodes |
Season 4 | October 15, 2026, 8 episodes |
Notice the rhythm. After an 18-month gap between the first two seasons, the show has settled into a mid-to-late October slot, roughly a year apart. Season 2 was the short one at six episodes. Season 4 is back to a full eight.
The audience has stuck around, too. Season 1 spent two weeks at No. 1 on Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language TV, with 57.5 million hours viewed in its first week alone. Season 2 peaked at No. 3. Season 3 climbed to No. 2, pulling 6.3 million views in the week ending October 26, 2025.
What is season 4 about?
Netflix’s synopsis opens with a single catastrophic moment. It wrecks the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the United States and Britain, and it takes down what’s left of the marriage she’s been trying to save. Meanwhile, President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler are deep in a conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon, a plan that could push the US toward war.
Kate’s partner in stopping them is the last person you’d pair her with: Todd Penn, the president’s husband. Netflix calls them an uneasy pair at best, which sounds about right for two people whose spouses are running the scheme.
The trailer, released on September 15, 2026, gives a taste of the tone. Kate confronts White House chief of staff Billie Appiah about a covert military incursion into an ally’s territory and tells her, “It’s over the line.” Billie’s answer: “The line moves.” If you’ve watched the first three seasons, you know exactly how much trouble is packed into that reply.
How did season 3 end? (Spoilers)
Spoilers for season 3 ahead. Grace became president in season 3 after the previous president died, and the finale gives Kate and Hal a rare moment of reconciliation. It doesn’t last. Spy Callum Ellis tells Kate that the Russians found their nuclear-powered submarine, but the Poseidon weapon is gone. Kate pieces it together: Hal and Grace probably took it. When she confronts Hal, he orders her to tell no one, then immediately whispers to Grace that Kate knows. That whisper is where season 3 leaves things.
Who is in the season 4 cast?
The central four are all back. Keri Russell plays Ambassador Kate Wyler and also serves as an executive producer. Rufus Sewell is her husband, Vice President Hal Wyler. Allison Janney returns as President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford as First Gentleman Todd Penn.
The biggest change is on the call sheet. Janney and Whitford have been promoted to series regulars, as The Hollywood Reporter first reported, and Netflix says Nana Mensah, who plays chief of staff Billie Appiah, has been bumped up too. Ato Essandoh (Stuart Hayford) and Ali Ahn (Eidra Park) are back as well. Netflix hasn’t announced any new characters or cast members for season 4 (as of October 9, 2026). Creator Debora Cahn stays on as showrunner, so the voice of the show isn’t going anywhere.
Emmys and Golden Globes: the awards record so far
Janney arrives as an Emmy winner. She took Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series at the 2026 Emmys, the first win for the show. It was a big year overall: seven nominations in 2026, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nods for Russell, Sewell and Janney. Counting one nomination in 2023 and two in 2025, the series now has 10 Emmy nominations.
The Golden Globes have been paying attention as well. Russell was nominated for best actress in a TV drama in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and the series itself earned a best drama series nomination for its first season.
How to watch from abroad or while traveling
Netflix shows you the version tied to the country you’re connecting from. The Diplomat is a Netflix original, so at home it’s easy. Travel is where it gets tricky. If October 15 finds you in a country where you can’t get to your usual Netflix, or where the audio and subtitle menu looks different from the one you’re used to, a VPN from our table puts you back on your home country’s version. You keep paying for your own subscription; the VPN only changes your virtual location.
Not every VPN gets along with Netflix, which is why we keep a ranked list. The results are based on StreamFix data, and our VPN rating methodology explains how the scores are calculated. Americans abroad can also check our guide to watching US streaming services from anywhere for the rest of their apps.
Which audio and subtitle languages will you get?
The show is in English and charts on Netflix’s English-language TV list, so viewers in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and Ireland are covered at home. Dubs and subtitles are another matter, because the languages on offer vary by country. Netflix in the Czech Republic, for example, offered a Czech dub and Czech subtitles for seasons 1 to 3. If you’re watching with someone who prefers another language and the track is missing abroad, our explainer on what to do when a Netflix language isn’t available covers why it happens. The catalog shifts by country too, as our look at the Netflix library by country shows.
Will there be The Diplomat season 5?
Netflix hasn’t announced a fifth season (as of October 9, 2026). The silence doesn’t mean much on its own, because this show tends to get renewed early. Netflix ordered season 4 on May 14, 2025, five months before season 3 premiered, and season 3 was picked up in October 2024, before season 2 arrived. For now, there’s simply no official word either way.

Your plan for Thursday, October 15
Set an alarm for 3 a.m. ET if you can’t wait, or catch the first episode at midnight on the West Coast, with breakfast in London and Dublin or after work in Sydney. Netflix is the only place to watch, and all eight episodes will be there at once. If you’re traveling that week, connect through a VPN from our table and stream with your own subscription, just like at home.
