How to Watch Zattoo outside the DACH region: VPN Guide 2026
When the opening match of the 2006 World Cup streamed live to a browser, this Zurich-based service, Zattoo, was one of the first in Europe to pull it off. Two decades on it carries more than 200 channels, a seven-day Replay archive and cloud recording, with its strongest footing in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Watching Zattoo outside the DACH region runs into a simple wall: this German-language live-TV service is not sold in your country, and it reads your IP address to keep it that way.
The block is tied to your IP, so the moment Zattoo sees a US or other foreign location, live TV and Replay never load. A VPN fixes it cleanly: with ExpressVPN you connect to a German server, pick up a local IP and the lineup behaves as it does in Berlin. Swiss broadcaster SRF, plus German ARD and ZDF and other channels, then stream in full quality up to 4K. You pay Zattoo directly; the VPN just unlocks the geo-block.

Who’s behind the service?
What is Zattoo
Zattoo is the Swiss IPTV service that has been running since 2006 and is one of the earliest European TV streaming platforms. Its core markets are Switzerland, Germany and Austria, where it distributes more than 200 channels alongside the Replay catch-up library and cloud recording. Four tiers (Free, Smart, Premium, Ultimate) differ in channel count, HD availability and recording storage. Based in Zurich, Zattoo also licenses the underlying technology to several local operators for their own IPTV products.

Company and history
- The Zurich service launched live TV in Switzerland during the World Cup opening match, becoming one of the first European platforms to stream broadcast television straight to a browser.
- The platform passed one million registered users across Europe, shortly after extending pilot operations into Denmark and the United Kingdom.
- A dedicated B2B division was formed, supplying hosted IPTV, OTT and hybrid-TV solutions to operators and media companies. That pillar now drives a large share of revenue.
- Replay arrived in Germany, letting subscribers watch any programme up to seven days after broadcast. The catch-up feature became a headline draw for the paid tiers.
- Swiss media group TX Group took a majority stake in the company. The same year the Ultimate tier launched, adding Full HD channels aimed at large living-room screens.
- The service officially expanded into Austria, completing its home trio of Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Alongside it, Ultra HD support arrived in the Ultimate tier.
- The company acquired startup Green Streams and its cloud-native media integration platform, aiming to build an operator-centric TV platform for Europe and enter new markets.
- The operator marked twenty years since launch. What began as a Zurich experiment in browser TV had grown into a player carrying over 200 channels and seven-day Replay across the DACH region.
- Tina Rodriguez stepped in as interim chief executive. She replaced Roger Elsener, who departed to lead Swiss public broadcaster SRF as its director.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our Zattoo testing team · Updated June 21, 2026
- Pick the yearly Ultimate plan instead of paying month to month and you keep the same channels while saving roughly 17 % a year.
- On Premium and Ultimate the Replay feature lets you rewind any channel up to 7 days, so you can restart a show you joined halfway through.
- Zattoo blocks live TV the moment you leave Switzerland or Germany, so set ExpressVPN to a server back home to keep your channels working abroad.
- The Free tier gives you 170+ channels at no cost, but only in SD with a 30-hour monthly cap on Smart TVs, so go Ultimate for Full HD sport.
- German and Austrian subscribers get EU-wide access abroad for 90 days per trip, but you must use Zattoo back home between trips to reset the clock.
