R9 Österreich is Austria’s free-to-air national regional channel, bundling nine provincial broadcasters, one for each federal state. Its round-the-clock linear programme goes out via the ASTRA satellite at 19.2 degrees East, alongside a livestream at r-9.at and on Zattoo Austria. - The venture launched in 2013, founded by WH Medien (Wien Holding), LT1 boss Wolf-Dieter Holzhey and Kobza Media, and unveiled at the Austrian Media Days as a shared umbrella for regional stations.
- In July 2015 the channel began unencrypted transmission on the Astra satellite at 19.2° East, making it nationally and freely available to any viewer in Austria with a satellite receiver.
- The official launch date fell on 7 September 2015. From then on the schedule ran nonstop, twenty-four hours a day, bundling regional stations from all nine federal provinces.
- On 1 February 2025 partner station Kurier TV shut down its own standalone satellite channel on Astra. It stayed part of R9, though, so all nine provincial stations remain available through the R9 channel.
- In October 2025 the channel rolled out two new formats for the 2025/2026 season, "Die Helfer*innen Österreichs" about volunteers and "Rundumadum", both airing on R9 HD and on demand in the R9digital app.
- The first episode of "Rundumadum", which links classic television with social media, premiered on 13 November 2025 on R9 HD at 6 p.m., with further episodes following on 20 and 27 November.
