Primeran is a free streaming platform in Basque (euskara), run by EITB, the Basque public broadcaster, headquartered in Bilbao. Launched on 15 September 2023, it is the largest free streaming service in the Basque language. The catalogue holds around 7,000 titles, including series, films, documentaries, music and concerts, plus Basque originals such as Desagertuta and Argi Gorriak. Kids’ programming lives on a companion platform, MAKUSI. Primeran is completely free and ad supported, requiring only a no cost registration. EITB’s own productions stream worldwide, making it a Basque window for the diaspora, though roughly 23 percent of the licensed catalogue is geo restricted abroad, most notably in the French Basque Country. - EITB launched Primeran as a free Basque-language public streaming service. The opening lineup covered drama, films, documentaries and kids content, all behind a no-cost registration with no subscription attached.
- The service reached the main smart TV platforms, including Samsung sets from 2018 onward, Android TV and Apple TV. Viewers could finally push the Basque catalog straight to the big screen.
- EITB launched the sister platform MAKUSI for children and teens, also free and in Basque. It opened with around 100 series and 120 films, widening the family offer alongside Primeran.
- On its first birthday, EITB reported over 111,000 registered viewers and more than 720,000 hours watched. The numbers confirmed real appetite for streaming content in the Basque language.
- EITB summed up 2025: it invested 9.3 million euros in film and series, with 71 percent going to Basque-language productions. A chunk of that fed directly into the Primeran catalog.
- EITB doubled down on Basque production, backing 45 film and television projects. The new titles are set to land on Primeran over time, keeping the catalog fresh for its audience.
- The original series Argi Gorriak, starring Itziar Ituño, premiered on Primeran on 20 March, eight episodes of dark comedy and thriller in Basque. It reinforced the Basque fiction pillar ahead of another original, Odol Ilargia, due in autumn.
- Primeran opened a new space called KULT_zinema, a weekly show about Basque film and series. The premiere, hosted by Amaia Artetxe, focused on Maspalomas, a contender at the Goya awards.
