How to Watch NPO Start outside the US: VPN Guide 2026
NPO Start is the streaming home of Dutch public broadcaster NPO, the rough equivalent of PBS with a live twist: NPO 1, 2 and 3 channels, NOS news and sport, homegrown Dutch drama, documentaries and the NPO Zapp kids strand. The free tier carries catch-up plus every live channel with ads, while NPO Plus adds an ad-free, watch-earlier experience for a few euros a month. The catch is that NPO Start only streams inside the Netherlands, so a US connection hits a geo-block.
Try to open the app from Chicago and the player swaps the show for a regional notice. A VPN fixes the location: pick a Dutch server, pick up a Netherlands IP, and the library loads exactly as it would in Utrecht. NPO does throttle plenty of VPNs, so hopping to a fresh server now and then keeps things smooth. Streams top out at 1080p.

Quick answer
Is NPO Start available outside its home country?
Not on a US connection. NPO Start checks for a Dutch IP and blocks everyone else with a regional message, so the player simply will not load shows for you. A VPN is the reliable workaround: switch on NordVPN, connect to a server in the Netherlands, and the service treats you as a viewer in Amsterdam. Sign in to your account and watch NOS and Dutch dramas in 1080p.

How-to
How to Unblock NPO Start with a VPN
Takes about 2 minutes. Works on your phone, tablet, TV, PC, or laptop.
1
Pick a dependable VPN
Go with NordVPN for fast Dutch servers and reliable unblocking. Pricing lands at $2.99 on the annual plan.
Skip free VPNs; NPO spots them quickly and data caps cut you off mid-episode.
2
Connect to a Netherlands server
Choose a Dutch location and wait for the handshake. If one server gets blocked, switch to another in the same country and retry.
3
Open NPO Start
Launch the site or app and sign in. The free tier and live channels cost nothing; NPO Plus removes ads and extends the archive.
4
Stream in 1080p
Pick a live channel or an on-demand title. If playback stutters, reconnect to a closer Dutch server and the 1080p feed steadies.

⚠️
Steer clear of free VPNs. Most of them actually collect and sell your data, lack proper security audits, and can even expose you to malware. They’re also useless for streaming. Platforms block them instantly, leaving you with more headaches than solutions. Stick to paid VPNs with verified audits, like NordVPN, if you want something that actually works.

NPO Start is the streaming home of NPO, the Dutch public broadcaster. It brings together live channels and catch-up from NPO 1, 2 and 3, with NOS news and sport built in, plus Dutch drama, documentaries and kids’ shows from NPO Zapp and Zappelin. The catch-up tier is free and needs no account, while a small Plus subscription drops the ads and opens a deeper archive. It’s tied to the Netherlands, and NPO blocks a lot of VPNs.

Uitzending GemistNPO Gemist
Major changes
Dutch public broadcasting launched its online catch-up service under the name Uitzending Gemist, letting viewers stream missed programmes from the public channels over the web.
The paid video-on-demand tier NPO Plus arrived, offering ad-free playback, earlier access to episodes and a far deeper archive than the free service for a monthly fee.
The service was renamed from NPO Gemist to NPO Start and pivoted toward an on-demand model, while a slice of formerly free programming moved behind the NPO Plus paywall.
The paid tier reverted to its original NPO Plus name after years of being sold as NPO Start Plus, while the live channels and a limited catch-up window stayed free.
Under pressure to cut 156 million euros, NPO announced the closure of four channels including the international BVN and eighty job losses, with NPO 2 Extra output shifting onto NPO Start.
NPO Plus raised its price for the first time since 2017, climbing from 2.95 to 3.49 euros a month, while the live channels and the free tier stayed at no cost.

5 tips from our NPO Start testing team · Updated July 15, 2026
1
If you only care about ad-free catch-up, NPO Start Plus at EUR 3.49/month remains the cheapest streaming subscription in the Netherlands even after the March 2026 hike.
2
The free tier covers live NPO 1/2/3 plus catch-up with ads, so you can follow Dutch drama, NOS news and sport without paying, just with a shorter archive window.
3
NPO Start is strictly Netherlands-only and one of the most aggressive VPN blockers among Dutch services, so from abroad you will need a reliable NordVPN with a fresh Dutch IP.
4
On a smart TV made before 2018 the rebuilt app may no longer install, so plug in a Chromecast or Apple TV and cast the stream to the screen instead.
5
Turn on subtitles using the gear icon inside the player, since the dedicated subtitle and audio buttons on your remote usually do nothing in the NPO app.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before subscribing to NPO Start.
The free tier and the live channels cost nothing and run with ads. NPO Plus adds ad-free playback, earlier episodes and a longer archive; from 2 March 2026 it rose to 3.49 euros a month, its first increase since 2017. Either way you reach it from the US by connecting NordVPN to a Dutch server first.
Yes, though NPO is stricter than most and blocks plenty of servers. Switch on NordVPN, choose a Netherlands location and refresh. If a server fails, hop to another one in the same country. Premium VPNs rotate IP addresses more often, so they slip past the block more reliably than free apps.
For the free tier and live channels you only need a Dutch IP via NordVPN; no sign-up is required. For NPO Plus you register and pay, and a card usually goes through from another country. Create the account once you are connected through the VPN and the service sees you as a viewer inside the Netherlands.
Streams top out at 1080p, which is plenty for NOS news and Dutch drama. Smoothness depends on the VPN, since a distant server can throttle the bitrate and pixelate the picture. Pick a closer Dutch node through NordVPN and playback steadies. Commercial rival Videoland pushes higher, but that is a paid service.
Both. The free tier covers the live NPO channels and a limited catch-up archive with ads. NPO Plus charges a monthly fee for ad-free viewing, earlier episodes and a deeper library. From the US, both layers only open after NordVPN connects to a Netherlands server; without it you hit the geo-block.
Live NPO 1, 2 and 3, NOS news and sport, Dutch drama, documentaries and the NPO Zapp and Zappelin kids strands. Since 2025 NPO Start also absorbs shows from the shuttered NPO 2 Extra. Most content is in Dutch without English subtitles, so some language skill helps. Reach it from the US with NordVPN.
Almost always it is the geo-block detecting a non-Dutch connection. Confirm NordVPN is connected to a Dutch server and clear your cookies. Restarting the app or switching to another Dutch node also helps. NPO periodically blacklists specific IP ranges, so a fresh server usually clears the problem.
Yes, the app is on iOS and Android in the usual stores. Turn on NordVPN with a Dutch server first, then open the app so it loads with the right IP. You can also stream through a desktop browser or cast to a smart TV and Chromecast once the location checks out.
