How to Watch La Chaîne L’Équipe Outside France: VPN Guide 2026
Few major European sports networks are completely free, yet the Amaury group built exactly that around its famous sports daily. La Chaîne L’Équipe is a free French sports TV channel on terrestrial channel 21, mixing live cycling with smaller stages, tennis, basketball, handball, rugby and esports, wrapped in sports news, panel debate shows and the documentary strand “L’Équipe explore” on big sporting names from around the world.
The catch sits in the rights deals: the live web and mobile app feeds of La Chaîne L’Équipe are licensed for France only, so the moment you land abroad the stream cuts out and flags an availability error. From the US, UK or anywhere outside the country, Surfshark swaps your IP for a French one. Pick a server in France, reopen the player, and the free broadcast returns at up to 1080p with no sign-up and no fee, exactly as it looks on a Paris sofa.

Who’s behind the service?
What is La Chaîne L’Équipe
La Chaîne L’Équipe is France’s free, ad-supported national sports channel from groupe Amaury, on DTT channel 21. It mixes news bulletins, debate magazines and live coverage of cycling, tennis, basketball, handball, rugby, motorsport, e-sport and lower-division football, plus the L’Équipe explore documentaries. Not the home of premium leagues, but the go-to for broad free sport.
Company and history
- Amaury launched the sports channel L’Équipe TV on 31 August 1998, tied to its famous daily. It became France’s first thematic television dedicated purely to sport coverage.
- After being awarded slot 21 on digital terrestrial TV, the channel rebranded to L’Équipe 21 on 12 December 2012 and entered the free lineup available in every French household.
- Management simplified the brand and renamed the channel to today’s „La chaîne L’Équipe“ on 3 September 2016. The figure 21 left the name, yet the slot at channel 21 stayed.
- On 9 March 2022 the regulator Arcom renewed the channel’s broadcast licence for five years, valid until 11 December 2027, securing its place in the free terrestrial lineup.
- February 2025 delivered a record monthly share of 2.2%, the highest in the channel’s history, driven by biathlon. Winter sports proved a free channel can still pull a big audience.
- During the terrestrial renumbering from 6 June 2025, the channel kept its long-familiar slot 21. The identity built around the „21“ stayed intact through the wider reshuffle.
- On 22 September 2025 the channel aired the Ballon d’Or ceremony for free, won by Ousmane Dembélé. The big football show produced one of the most-watched evenings of the season.
- The service closed 2025 with a record annual share of 1.6% among viewers over four, matching the 2023 high. TV chief Vincent Broussard called it the channel’s best season ever.

5 tips from our La Chaîne L’Équipe testing team · Updated June 10, 2026
- La Chaîne L’Équipe is completely free with no subscription: stream the live channel on web at lequipe.fr or via the free apps, no account or payment needed.
- The online stream is geo-locked to France for sports rights, so from abroad launch Surfshark and connect to a French server before opening lequipe.fr or the app.
- Don’t expect Ligue 1 or the Champions League here (those sit with DAZN and Canal+/beIN): the real draw is broad free sport, cycling, tennis, basket, rugby, handball and motorsport.
- Install the free app straight onto your Samsung, LG, Apple TV or Android TV and watch the live channel on the big screen, no set-top box or cable subscription required.
- For deeper viewing, look up the L’Équipe explore documentaries in the app, long-form sports films you won’t find on the rolling news bulletins.
