Kinopoisk started in 2003 as Russia’s answer to IMDb and only became a streaming service in July 2018, when paid viewing moved inside the broader Yandex Plus subscription. That bundling is the whole point: films and series arrive alongside music and the rest of Yandex rather than as a standalone ticket. It leads its home market with roughly a third of industry revenue. The catalogue mixes licensed international titles with Russian originals, KHL hockey and, since July 2026, a dedicated anime section. - Vitaly Tatsy and Dmitry Sukhanov launched Kinopoisk as a hobby film database built around ratings and reviews. No video at all back then, just a catalog that quickly became the most quoted movie encyclopedia in Russia.
- Yandex bought Kinopoisk for 80 million dollars, its priciest acquisition at that point. The search giant was after the audience data behind the ratings, and the deal later became the backbone of its subscription bundle.
- Watching films opened up to Yandex Plus subscribers for the first time. The encyclopedia turned into a video service without a separate checkout: streaming simply came bundled with music and the other perks.
- Days before its eighteenth birthday the company dropped the HD suffix from the streaming brand and rolled out a new logo and typeface. Kinopoisk started positioning itself as a studio and a magazine, not merely a player.
- The Hollywood majors stopped licensing to Russian streaming services. Friends, The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter vanished from the catalog, and the gap was filled with domestic productions and Asian acquisitions.
- Yandex Plus subscribers in Belarus gained a sports add-on. Kinopoisk started carrying Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A and France’s Ligue 1. Sport had been running there already, so the European leagues were the new part.
- The service turned into a storefront for rival subscriptions: viewers could buy Ivi access straight from a film page, with Kion and Smotrim added in December 2025.
- The KHL season closed on a record. More than three million Yandex Plus subscribers watched hockey on Kinopoisk, up 35 percent year over year, and all 824 regular season and playoff games were carried live.
- The football World Cup ended as the biggest sporting event in the section’s history. Kinopoisk carried 35 of the 104 matches exclusively, rather than on Match TV, and more than 8.7 million Yandex Plus subscribers followed the tournament.

The section launched alongside the new Ghost in the Shell series and sits next to Attack on Titan, Dandadan and Spy x Family. Since the start of 2026, 4.5 million subscribers have watched anime there, and ratings on genre titles have passed 3.8 million.
Kinopoisk runs in the browser and in iOS and Android apps, on Samsung and LG smart TVs, on Android TV and Yandex TV boxes. Apple TV works, and so does casting through Chromecast.
