How to Watch Okko outside Russia: VPN Guide 2026
Russian viewers found the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics in an unlikely place in February 2026: not on state television, but inside a subscription app. Okko took the Games rights ahead of every broadcaster, then opened the feed to anyone who registered, no payment asked. The aggression shows up in the numbers. TelecomDaily counted 10.1 million paying subscribers across 2025, up 52 percent in a year, and its full-year 2025 ranking put the Saint Petersburg service second with a 15.1 percent share. From an American connection the picture changes. The Okko catalog is licensed for 6 countries: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
The geo filter reads your IP address, so licensed films and imported series need CyberGhost on a Russian server. In-house originals are the one exception and stream to any active subscriber worldwide. Getting that subscription is the harder half, because checkout takes a MIR card or a card from a Russian bank and nothing else. Playback tops out at 4K with HDR and Dolby Atmos.

How to Unblock Okko with a VPN
Takes about 2 minutes. Works on your phone, tablet, TV, PC, or laptop.
- Pick a VPN that still offers a Russian locationVery few providers still run Russian locations, since most brands pulled their Moscow nodes after 2022. CyberGhost opens at $1.75 a month, so confirm its Russian server before you pay.Annual billing usually costs far less than paying month to month.
- Connect to a Moscow locationChoose Moscow or Saint Petersburg and wait for the tunnel to settle. Then run a leak test, because the filter checks both your real IP address and your DNS queries.
- Open the Okko websiteLoad the streaming site and sign in. A new account needs a Russian phone number and a Russian payment method, so registration stalls with a foreign card.
- Start playback in 4KThe top tiers handle 4K with HDR and Dolby Atmos. If the picture stutters, switch to another Russian node or change protocol, since congested servers are the usual culprit.Offline downloads work in the mobile app, which helps on a long flight.

Who’s behind the service?
What is Okko
Okko is one of the heavyweights of Russian streaming. It launched in 2011 as Yota Play, took its current name in 2014 and is run out of Saint Petersburg. Ownership has been turbulent: Sberbank took control in 2020, then sold the service to Novye Vozmozhnosti in May 2022 after US sanctions hit the bank. It sits second at home and is known for the most prolific original-series slate in the market, from the nineties crime saga Likhie to the prison drama Autsors. Live channels and sport follow, including 2026 Winter Olympics rights. Playback reaches 4K with HDR and Dolby Atmos across 6 countries.

Company and history
- In July 2011 the mobile operator Yota launches Yota Play, a video store preinstalled on Samsung and LG smart TVs. After a spell as plain Play, the service becomes Okko in 2014.
- Sberbank buys 100 percent of Rambler Group and with it Okko. The same year the service lands exclusive Russian rights to the Academy Awards ceremony.
- US sanctions against the bank force Sberbank to sell Okko to AO Novye Vozmozhnosti. The buyer itself lands on the UK sanctions list on 29 June that year.
- Apple pulls the app from the Russian App Store. After months of talks Okko returns to the store in August 2023, leaving iPhone owners on the browser for a year.
- Disney movies, the Marvel slate, ABC Studios series and Fox titles vanish from the Okko catalog. The service loses a big chunk of Hollywood and pivots hard toward homegrown Russian production.
- The prison drama Autsors, starring Ivan Yankovsky and billed as the most anticipated Russian series of the year, premieres on 13 February. Okko leans further into original production after the Hollywood exit.
- The Okko sports arm signs an exclusive Bundesliga deal through the agency Infront, starting with 2025/26. The contract covers all 306 league matches a season and runs to the end of 2028/29.
- The Milan Cortina Winter Olympics run exclusively on Okko from 6 to 22 February, free after registration. TelecomDaily puts the service second on the market that month, with 10.1 million paying subscribers, up 52 percent.
- The UK sanctions regulator OFSI fines Apple’s Irish arm 390,000 pounds over payments it sent to the Okko operator back in 2022. The penalty traces to AO Novye Vozmozhnosti, the owner at the time.
- Apple deletes the Okko app from the Russian App Store on 6 April, five days after switching off payments in the country and less than three weeks after the OFSI penalty. Existing installs keep working.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our Okko testing team · Updated August 2, 2026
- Prime at 399 RUB suits most viewers; the 500 RUB jump to Prime + Premium only pays off if you actually watch Amediateka and START.
- Okko takes Russian cards only, Mir or a Visa or Mastercard issued by a Russian bank, so foreign cards get declined at checkout.
- Outside Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan only Okko originals play, so the rest needs CyberGhost on a Russian server.
- Apple pulled the app from the Russian App Store on 6 April 2026, so on iPhone open okko.tv in Safari and add it to your home screen.
- Use the globe icon in the player to switch to the original soundtrack, an option limited to selected Full HD films rather than every series.
