How to Watch Ivi outside Russia: VPN Guide 2026
Ivi arrived in 2010 on an odd-sounding bargain: press play now, let an ad pick up the bill. The hybrid stuck, and it makes this one of the oldest legal streaming libraries in Russia. Thousands of films carry a “Бесплатно” tag, meaning free, and run with ad breaks. Since April 2026 paying is a choice: a cheaper plan that keeps the ads, a dearer one without. Ivi is not available in the US, because its licenses cover Russia and ten more countries in the region, 11 markets in total.
Access here is decided at the checkout, long before any catalog loads. It demands a Russian bank card and a Russian phone number, so a viewer in Chicago cannot open an account. Since April 2026 the service also spots an active VPN and blocks part of the catalog. CyberGhost moves your IP address, yet it cannot settle a ruble invoice. That leaves Russian speakers who already hold an account and want their 4K shows.

Who’s behind the service?
What is Ivi
Ivi is one of the oldest Russian streaming services, launched on February 26, 2010 by Oleg Tumanov and Dmitry Alimov. It runs at ivi.ru under the Cyrillic name Иви, operated by OOO Ivi.ru inside the Cyprus-based holding Ivi.ru Media Limited; Nikolai Vasilkov has been CEO since April 2022. The model is hybrid: thousands of movies and shows stream free with ads, paid plans unlock new releases, and since April 2026 you choose whether ads stay. The catalog passes 100,000 titles plus 150 live TV channels; paid tiers add 4K, HDR, five devices, a PIN-locked kids profile and offline downloads. Russian and Soviet classics sit beside Turkish and Korean series, anime, documentaries, audio series, micro dramas and 44 originals (March 2026). ComNews calls Ivi the only major Russian streamer outside any ecosystem; 2024 revenue grew 38 percent. Licensing covers Russia and ten more countries in the region, 11 markets in total.

Company and history
- Oleg Tumanov and Dmitry Alimov opened Ivi to the public as one of the first legal video libraries in Russia. It drew 180,000 visitors on day one, with advertising paying for the films.
- The Nasdaq listing of Ivi, announced in late 2020, was shelved indefinitely. The trigger was a Russian bill capping foreign ownership of audiovisual services.
- The Latin “ivi” wordmark gave way to the Cyrillic “Иви”. The rebrand of Ivi arrived with a new visual identity and a hard pivot to domestic audiences after Hollywood studios left Russia.
- VTB said it had exited the capital of Ivi, where the bank held roughly fifteen percent. The stake had changed hands weeks earlier, and neither the buyer nor the price was disclosed.
- Ivi and Kinopoisk started selling each other’s subscriptions, a first on the Russian market. From either app the rival catalog can be added as a paid extra, with revenue split between them.
- RBC reported that retail giant Wildberries had weighed buying the platform. The talks led nowhere because Ivi management preferred to stay independent, so Wildberries announced a service of its own.
- Ivi became the first Russian streamer to launch a paid tier that still carries ads, at 199 RUB a month, undercutting the ad-free plan. MTS Ads Premium Video sells the inventory across the catalog.
- Alongside Kinopoisk, Okko and Wink, Ivi began warning that part of the catalog stops working when a VPN is active. The step followed a request from the Russian Ministry of Digital Development.
- The crime drama Kholod with Lyubov Aksyonova premiered the same day on Ivi, START, Wink and KION. It was co-produced with the studio Algoritm. Its ten episodes arrive weekly on Thursdays.
