Nothing. Freeview NZ says it’s a free service and always will be. There’s no subscription fee, because the broadcasters behind the platform fund it collectively to keep it free. The only costs are on your end: a supported TV or streaming device and an internet connection that can handle the stream. In US terms, it’s closer to a free antenna than to YouTube TV or Sling TV.
Freeview NZ is run by Freeview Limited, a joint venture backed by TVNZ, Sky Free, Whakaata Māori, and RNZ. Leon Mead has been general manager since August 2022. In February 2025, Freeview said 2.7 million New Zealanders received it at home, a figure that covers antenna, satellite, and streaming combined, not just the app.
Freeview lists Samsung and LG smart TVs from 2018 models onward, Panasonic smart TVs from 2017, and Hisense TVs. The list also covers TVs and devices running Android 8.0 or later from Sony, TCL, Philips, Panasonic, Veon, and JVC Android TV, along with the SmartVU dongle and SmartVU+ boxes. The app can be downloaded only from the app stores on those supported devices; there’s no other way to get it.
No. Freeview has no phone, tablet, or web app that streams channels; Freeview Streaming TV runs only on supported smart TVs and TV devices. Running NordVPN on a laptop won’t change that, because location isn’t the obstacle: there’s simply no web player. The Freeview TV Guide mobile app only shows listings and reminders; it doesn’t stream anything.
When we checked Freeview’s channels page on September 14, 2026, its streaming filter showed 21 TV channels and 5 radio stations. On the TV side: TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, Three, Bravo, Whakaata Māori, Duke, Sky Open, Rush, Te Reo, Three+1, Bravo+1, eden, HGTV, Al Jazeera, Trackside 1 and 2, Shine, Firstlight, Hope Channel, Parliament TV, and Juice TV. The radio stations are RNZ National, RNZ Concert, Rhema, Life FM, and Sanctuary.
Not every Freeview channel makes it into the app. As of September 14, 2026, the streaming filter left out TVNZ 1+1, TVNZ 2+1, Duke+1, Channel 33, and Wairarapa TV, as well as George FM, Radio Aotearoa, and CH200. Three+1 and Bravo+1 do stream, though, so the +1 channels aren’t all gone.
No. Freeview On Demand is no longer available, and Freeview Streaming TV works just like broadcast TV delivered over the internet, so it’s live channels only. For on-demand shows, Freeview NZ points you to the broadcasters’ own apps: TVNZ+, ThreeNow, and MĀORI+. Each has its own page on StreamFix, since they’re separate services with their own rules.
Not in the app, at least for now. Freeview says live streams can’t be recorded on any channel, so recording still means a recorder fed by an antenna or satellite dish. The app offers no captions or subtitles; captions and audio description work only with antenna or satellite reception, and even then only on selected programs. Parental controls don’t apply to streaming TV apps either, Freeview’s own included.
Not necessarily. Freeview says you don’t need a new TV for Freeview Streaming TV; you can simply buy a SmartVU device, and both the SmartVU dongle and SmartVU+ boxes are on the supported list. If you own a 2018 or 2019 Samsung TV, check first: the help pages say the app for those model years is still being worked on.
It’s a new service Freeview NZ announced on May 18, 2026. Built on the DVB-I standard, it’s designed to deliver channels over Wi-Fi or broadband directly in the TV’s interface, with no separate app. In the announcement, Freeview said it planned to launch in the third quarter of 2026, initially on TCL and Hisense TVs only, and called NextGen the world’s first nationwide free-to-air platform on DVB-I. As of September 14, 2026, Freeview’s website still listed it as coming soon.
No. UK Freeview is digital terrestrial TV in the United Kingdom, run by a different operator, and Freely is a separate British service. Freeview Australia is a separate service, too, run by a different operator in another country. Freeview NZ is a New Zealand platform whose website is freeviewnz.tv. The address freeview.co.nz is just a parked registrar page, not the operator’s site.
On Google Play, Freeview Streaming TV is published by Dish TV Technologies Limited. In September 2026, it had a 3.1-star rating from 410 reviews and more than 100,000 downloads. The listing advertises a live stream of 20+ channels and says plainly that the app is available on selected devices in NZ, in line with the device list Freeview NZ publishes.
