Yes, a VPN works on almost every Firestick: all 7 big VPNs have a Fire OS app, and 5 of 7 list one for Vega OS (as of October 19, 2026).
Three sticks run Vega OS: the 4K Select (2025), HD (2026) and 4K 3rd Gen (2026). PIA isn’t currently compatible, and CyberGhost doesn’t list Vega OS.
Install from the Amazon Appstore. Sideloading an APK works only on Fire OS; which apps you see depends on your Amazon account country.
IPVanish reports 30 to 65 Mbps on a stick with the VPN on, while Netflix asks for 15 Mbps for 4K.
Setting up a VPN on Firestick takes a few minutes, and it works on every model except the 2014 original. Check the operating system first. On Fire OS, all 7 big VPN providers offer an app. On the three sticks that run Amazon’s newer Vega OS, 5 of the 7 list one. All figures come from Amazon and the providers’ own pages, checked on October 19, 2026.
The quickest start is NordVPN: its Fire TV app sits in the Amazon Appstore, and one account covers up to 10 devices at the same time.
Can you put a VPN on a Firestick? It depends on Fire OS or Vega OS
Yes. The only stick that can’t run one is the 1st Gen from 2014, which NordVPN says doesn’t allow VPN connections. Everything else comes down to the system. Fire OS is Amazon’s fork of Android, so Android VPN apps usually run on it. Vega OS is Amazon’s newer system, and Amazon lists three sticks on it: the 4K Select (2025), the HD (2026) and the 4K 3rd Gen (2026).

Fire OS 8 is built on Android 10 and 11, Fire OS 7 on Android 9, Fire OS 6 on Android 7.1 and Fire OS 5 on Android 5.1. The older the version, the fewer VPN apps you get: Surfshark and Proton VPN need Fire OS 7, while ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and PIA start at Fire OS 6.
How to check which system your stick runs
Open Settings, go to the device menu (its name varies by Fire OS version) and select About. Under Software Version, Fire OS shows its full name and number, like Fire OS 8.1.7.4. Vega OS shows only a short label such as OS 1.1.
Tip: if the line says “Fire OS” with a number of 7 or higher, every VPN in this guide has an app for your stick. A bare “OS 1.1” or “OS 2.0” means Vega OS, so check the VPN table below first.
Which VPNs have an app for Fire OS and Vega OS
Fire OS is easy: all 7 providers we track have an app. Vega OS is where they split, and some apps there still lack features.

The table reflects each provider’s help pages as of October 19, 2026; how we check sources is in our StreamFix methodology. PIA states it isn’t currently compatible with Vega OS. CyberGhost doesn’t mention Vega OS on its pages.
Surfshark covers both systems with one subscription: an app for Fire OS 7 and later, a Vega OS app with the core features, and unlimited simultaneous connections for every stick in the house. More in our Surfshark review.
How to install a VPN on Firestick from the Amazon Appstore
The Amazon Appstore is the normal route on both Fire OS and Vega OS. On Vega OS it’s effectively the only one, so these steps apply to every current stick.
Step by step setup
On the home screen, open the search (Find or the magnifying glass).
Type the name of your VPN and select the official app.
Select Get or Download and wait for the install to finish.
Open the app and sign in with your VPN account.
Accept the VPN connection request, then pick a server in the country of the service you want to watch.
If the streaming app was already open, close it and start it again so it picks up the new location.
Signing in with your phone and the Fire OS warning
Several providers spare you typing a password with the remote. Surfshark shows a QR code: if you’re logged in on your phone, scan it with the camera. CyberGhost generates a PIN that you confirm in your CyberGhost account. IPVanish notes that its QR code won’t show on the 4K Select (2025) or the HD (2026), so keep your login details handy there.
When you first connect, Fire OS may show one or more VPN warnings. NordVPN explains these are default Fire OS messages and it’s safe to continue.
Sideloading a VPN APK: when it helps and why it fails on Vega OS
Sideloading means installing the app file (APK) directly instead of through the Appstore. ExpressVPN suggests it when you can’t find the app in the Appstore or can’t access the Appstore at all.
On Vega OS this route is closed to regular users. Vega apps use a different package format (VPKG, not APK), so a Fire OS VPN app won’t run there and the provider has to build a Vega version. Amazon allows sideloading on Vega only in Developer Mode, which needs a developer account, device registration and a USB cable to a computer with the Vega SDK.
Installing with Downloader on Fire OS
Install the Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore.
Open Settings, then My Fire TV (called Device, System or Device & Software, depending on the version), then Developer Options.
No Developer Options? Open About and click the device name about seven times until a confirmation appears.
Turn on Apps from Unknown Sources, or under Install unknown apps switch Downloader to ON.
In Downloader, enter the APK address from the VPN provider’s official website, then install and open the app.
Surfshark and PIA both describe this Downloader route. Only use the link from the provider’s own site.
ExpressVPN is the most flexible here: an Appstore app for Fire OS 6 and later, an APK for the same versions, and a separate app for Vega OS. See the ExpressVPN review.
Why you can’t see the VPN app in the Appstore: your Amazon account country
Your Appstore depends on the country of residence in your Amazon account’s Country/Region Settings. Amazon.com serves the US and many other countries, Amazon.de covers Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Amazon.fr France and Belgium, Amazon.es Spain and Portugal, and Amazon.mx Mexico. Developers can also limit an app to specific countries, so an app listed in one marketplace can be missing from another.
Amazon lists 17 countries where Fire TV devices work, including the US, the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Mexico. If you move, Amazon tells you to change your account country, and that has a cost: you can no longer access your Prime Video purchases or rentals, and some apps may not work in the new country.
Encryption runs on the stick’s processor, and that’s the bottleneck. IPVanish says you’ll typically see a maximum of 30 to 65 Mbps on a Fire TV Stick with the VPN on, while the Fire TV Cube reaches more than 130 Mbps. Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for 4K and 5 Mbps for 1080p, so even 30 Mbps is double what 4K needs.
The 4K Max 2nd Gen has the fastest chip (up to 2.0 GHz, against 1.7 GHz in the 4K 2nd Gen, 4K Plus and 4K Select) and is the only stick with tri-band Wi-Fi 6E. Wired Ethernet on Fire OS sticks runs through an external adapter at 10/100 Mbps.

Which stick to buy if you want a VPN
If the VPN matters, pick a Fire OS 8 stick: the 4K Max 2nd Gen, the 4K 2nd Gen or the 4K Plus (2025). All 7 VPNs have an app, sideloading works, and you get 2 GB of RAM. The Vega OS sticks (4K Select, HD 2026 and 4K 3rd Gen) have 1 GB, take apps only from the Appstore, and 5 of 7 VPNs list one, several still missing features.
Still on a 2nd Gen or Basic Edition with Fire OS 5? IPVanish is the only provider that clearly supports it: CyberGhost names the 2nd Gen but also asks for Fire OS 6. Otherwise, a VPN on your router protects the stick too, and NordVPN and ExpressVPN count a router as one device.
IPVanish suits mixed households: apps for Fire OS from the 2nd Gen on and for Vega OS, with no limit on connections. According to StreamFix reviews, setup on a Fire Stick took less than 2 minutes. More in the IPVanish review.
Pick a server in the right country. It has to match the service, for example the US for an American catalog or the UK for BBC iPlayer.
Try another server in the same country. For Netflix, see our guide to the Netflix proxy error.
Clear the streaming app’s cache and free up storage. Surfshark notes that clearing the cache removes old location data. IPVanish recommends keeping 500 MB to 1 GB free on the stick at all times.
Update Fire OS and the VPN app. Surfshark and Proton VPN need Fire OS 7 or later.
Know the Vega OS limits. Surfshark supports only WireGuard there, IPVanish has no split tunneling or protocol choice, and NordVPN has no Dedicated IP on Vega yet.
Still stuck? Restart the stick, connect the VPN first and only then open the streaming app.
How to turn off the VPN on your stick
Open the VPN app and disconnect. In PIA, for example, you highlight the green power button and press the middle button on the remote. To remove the VPN, uninstall the app in Settings. A router VPN is switched off in the router’s admin page.
One VPN for your stick, phone and laptop
A stick is rarely the only screen you stream on. With NordVPN, one account covers 10 devices at once.
Its Fire TV app offers NordLynx, NordWhisper and OpenVPN, plus split tunneling to keep chosen apps outside the VPN. On Vega OS some features are still missing, Dedicated IP among them. Our NordVPN review goes deeper.
Once the VPN is running, our list of US streaming services you can watch from abroad shows what a US server opens up. Below you can see in how many countries Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ are available.
No. The VPN is a separate app from your VPN provider. You install it from the Amazon Appstore, or on Fire OS you can sideload the provider’s official APK.
Not for everyday use. A VPN helps when you’re abroad and want your home services back. It doesn’t replace subscriptions: you still need an account with each service you watch.
Yes. The 4K Select (2025) runs Vega OS 1.1, and NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN and IPVanish list a Vega OS app. PIA says it isn’t currently compatible with Vega OS, and CyberGhost doesn’t list it. Install the app from the Appstore, since sideloading isn’t available to regular users on Vega.
Proton VPN’s free plan installs and runs on Fire OS 7 and later, but Proton offers streaming support only on its paid plans, and the free plan covers one device. For watching services from another country, a paid plan is the realistic option. Our Proton VPN review compares the plans.
Your stick most likely runs Vega OS. PIA states that it isn’t currently compatible with Amazon’s Vega OS. On Fire OS 6 and later, PIA is available in the Appstore or through Downloader, as described in our PIA review.
Yes. IPVanish says the Cube gives the best performance with a VPN, reaching streaming speeds of more than 130 Mbps, against a typical maximum of 30 to 65 Mbps on a stick. The Cube 2nd and 3rd Gen run Fire OS 7, so all 7 VPNs have an app.
Open the VPN app, pick another country or server from the list and connect. Then restart the streaming app so it reads the new location. The Appstore country is a separate setting: Amazon ties it to the country of residence in your Amazon account.
Using a VPN is legal in the EU, and you keep paying for your subscriptions as usual. Outside the EU, the rules vary.
