How to Watch Virgin Media Play from Anywhere: VPN Guide 2026
Late May 2025 is when the Irish broadcaster bolted a login screen onto its whole catalog, Dublin viewers included. The account costs nothing, yet it is compulsory, and only behind it does a second, separate layer read your IP address. That is why watching Virgin Media Play abroad takes two moves rather than one. Past the wall sit four live channels, Virgin Media One through Four, catch-up covering more than ninety percent of output, and a selection of boxsets.
Programs stay online for 30 days, though rights cut some of them to 7. The broadcaster says most of its catalog can only be watched inside the Republic of Ireland. Alongside Irish drama, news and reality comes serious sport: exclusive free-to-air Irish rights to the Nations Championship, plus an August 2026 NFL deal that brings at least 22 games a season to the channels and the player. Ads are part of the bargain, an ad blocker can stop playback, and a server in Ireland through NordVPN settles the geography.

Who’s behind the service?
What is Virgin Media Play
Virgin Media Play is the streaming and catch up service of Virgin Media Television, the commercial broadcaster based in Dublin. It carries Virgin Media One, Two, Three and Four live, and more than ninety percent of the schedule returns on demand for thirty days after transmission, with some titles limited to a week by rights. Watching costs nothing and the ads are part of the deal, though everyone needs an account, viewers inside Ireland included. Expect Irish drama, sport, reality and Virgin Media News, with Gogglebox Ireland and Love Island landing minutes after they air.
Company and history
- TV3 launched 3Player on 8 October 2011, replacing the older TV3 Catch Up service and giving Irish viewers their first free browser-based way to watch broadcasts after transmission.
- Liberty Global completed its purchase of TV3 Group on 7 December 2015, moving the Irish commercial broadcaster and its catch-up player under the owner that still stands behind the brand.
- The whole group became Virgin Media Television on 30 August 2018 and 3Player turned into Virgin Media Player. TV3, 3e and be3 were renamed One, Two and Three.
- A fourth channel, Virgin Media Four, went on air on 24 August 2022 across Saorview and the Virgin Media platform. It only reached the streaming service with the September 2024 relaunch.
- The service was relaunched and renamed Virgin Media Play on 2 September 2024. The redesign pushed live channels and recommended shows to the front instead of a plain episode list.
- Watching without signing in disappeared at the end of May 2025. Registration became compulsory for every viewer, Irish households included, and it now sits in front of the geo check.
- Virgin Media More, a channel exclusive to cable customers since April 2022, closed on 28 November 2025. It had never been part of the streaming service, so the lineup behind the login was unchanged.
- On 5 February 2026 the broadcaster announced it was the exclusive free-to-air Irish home of the Nations Championship, with all 42 fixtures from each edition of the tournament, in 2026 and in 2028.
- The NFL and the Irish broadcaster signed a three-year deal on 17 August 2026 running to the end of the 2028 season: at least 22 games a season, Super Bowl included, on the free-to-air channels and on the player.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our Virgin Media Play testing team · Updated September 7, 2026
- Outside Ireland most titles throw a rights notice, so pick an Irish server in NordVPN before you open the player, not after.
- Play costs nothing and never asks for a card, but a free account has been mandatory for everyone since late May 2025, viewers inside Ireland included.
- Big shows land on Play minutes after they air, yet most stay only 30 days and a few drop off after seven days because of rights.
- Joined a live programme halfway through? Restart winds Virgin Media One, Two, Three or Four back to the top of the show.
- For the big screen, Play arrives through Virgin Media and Sky boxes and through NOW; on a computer or phone it is the browser or the iOS and Android app.
