How to Watch MTN One TV outside South Africa: VPN Guide 2026
The stand-up special Prins Live & Recorded 2 was filmed in Johannesburg, and it now streams for free next to Nollywood hits, telenovelas and homegrown dramas. The catch is in MTN’s small print: in South Africa the service is reserved for MTN customers with a valid mobile number, so everything hinges on a South African connection. Watching MTN One TV outside South Africa takes two things, and you may already have one of them: your MTN SIM and a VPN.
MTN began rolling the service out in June 2026, promising thousands of hours of free content with no subscription and no credit card. You sign in with your MTN number and a one-time code sent by SMS, so keep roaming switched on. Then ExpressVPN moves your virtual location to South Africa and the catalog opens just like it does at home. It all runs in a browser on your phone, tablet or laptop.

Quick answer
Can you watch MTN One TV outside South Africa?
Yes, as long as you have an active MTN South Africa SIM and a VPN. The service is limited to MTN SA customers with a valid number, and each login uses a one-time code sent by SMS. Connect ExpressVPN to a South African server, your virtual location moves to South Africa, and you stream the same catalog you would in Johannesburg. Registration is free, needs no credit card and is open to anyone 18 or older.

Steer clear of free VPNs. Most of them actually collect and sell your data, lack proper security audits, and can even expose you to malware. They’re also useless for streaming. Platforms block them instantly, leaving you with more headaches than solutions. Stick to paid VPNs with verified audits, like ExpressVPN, if you want something that actually works.
About the platform
Who’s behind the service?
What is MTN One TV
MTN One TV is the pan-African streaming service from mobile operator MTN, run in South Africa by MTN South Africa. It serves up thousands of hours of homegrown stories, comedy, Nollywood movies, telenovelas, documentaries, true crime and kids’ shows, from the stand-up special Prins Live & Recorded 2 to Skyf and Supa Strikas. Most titles are in English or Afrikaans. The service is free with ads, and you sign in with an MTN number and a one-time SMS code. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and laptops. Abroad, all you need is your MTN SIM in your phone for the SMS code and a VPN with a server in South Africa, and the South African catalog is yours from anywhere.
Company and history
Major changes
- MTN launches FrontRow, its first attempt at video streaming. According to Bandwidth Blog, it was a distant predecessor of today's MTN One TV rather than the same service.
- FrontRow is renamed MTN VU. The service later shuts down, partly because subscribers disliked paying rental fees on top of their subscription, according to Bandwidth Blog.
- MTN Group and Synamedia announce a partnership on a pan-African streaming platform combining linear TV and video on demand with subscription, advertising and free channel models.
- MTN Group begins rolling out MTN One TV market by market, with payment through airtime, Mobile Money and other local methods where available.
- South Africa and Zambia become the first pilot markets, as MTN confirmed to Stuff. The country picker in the player lists exactly these two.
- MTN One TV invites African producers to pitch projects at Durban FilmMart, where it is Gold Sponsor, and at MIP Africa during FAME Week Africa as Platinum Sponsor.

Insider Tips
Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our MTN One TV testing team · Updated September 24, 2026
- It’s free with ads, but standard data charges may apply on mobile, so stream over Wi-Fi or add an MTN OneTV data bundle before a binge.
- For homegrown laughs, queue up comedian Prins in Prins Live & Recorded 2, shot in Johannesburg, then try Skyf; most titles are in English or Afrikaans.
- MTN One TV runs right in your browser on phone, tablet or laptop, and you can pin it to your home screen as a web app for one-tap access.
- Before handing the kids Supa Strikas, set the four-digit parental lock so they can’t wander into the true crime row.
- Traveling outside South Africa? Connect ExpressVPN to a South African server and your MTN account picks up right where you left off.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before you start watching MTN One TV.
MTN’s own FAQ says that in South Africa, MTN One TV is only available to MTN SA customers with a valid mobile number. You sign in with that number and a one-time code sent by SMS, so the SIM has to receive texts while you travel. Keep it in your phone with roaming switched on. Without an MTN number, you can browse the catalog as a guest.
ExpressVPN is a strong pick: it has servers in South Africa and switches your virtual location there in a few taps. Once connected, your MTN account streams just like it does at home, wherever in the world you are. Install the VPN on your phone or laptop, pick a South African server, then open the player in your browser.
Yes. MTN calls MTN One TV 100% free, with no subscriptions and no hidden fees. The tradeoff is advertising: ads may play before or during some content. Abroad, the VPN is your only cost. Watch your data too, since standard data charges may apply unless you are on a zero-rated MTN bundle, and MTN sells dedicated OneTV streaming data bundles.
It runs in the browser, so a phone, tablet or laptop is all you need. You can pin it to your home screen as a web app (PWA) for one-tap access. One account covers up to five devices, but only one can stream at a time.
Think South African comedy, homegrown dramas under the Homegrown Stories banner, Nollywood films and Romanza Daily Telenovelas, plus micro dramas, documentaries, true crime, nature and faith programming. Sports fans get magazine shows. Standouts include the stand-up special Prins Live & Recorded 2 and the series Skyf, while younger viewers can head to Kids for Supa Strikas.
Most titles are in English or Afrikaans, and a handful come in isiZulu, isiXhosa or Sesotho. The interface itself is in English, with a simple menu of Home, TV Shows, Movies and Kids. For South Africans living in the US, that means familiar voices and humor from home, and for everyone else a surprisingly rich mix of languages.
No. MTN’s FAQ states that offline viewing is not currently supported, so you need an internet connection every time you press play. Plan around flights or long train rides without Wi-Fi. At the hotel or at home, switch on ExpressVPN, connect to a South African server and pick up the next episode in your browser.
Loosely at best. If Tubi is your go-to streamer in the US, MTN One TV fills a very different gap: South African comedy, telenovelas and Nollywood films, tied to an MTN phone number instead of an email address. According to MTN, the service is available in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Zambia, and content may vary by country.
