How to Watch Freevision Play outside South Africa: VPN Guide 2026
Freevision Play is what you get when the company that carries South Africa’s broadcast signal puts TV straight online. Sentech, the state-owned operator based in Johannesburg, streams community stations like Soweto TV, Cape Town TV and 1KZN TV straight to a browser, a phone or Android TV, with no subscription and no decoder, just ads. There’s one catch. According to its own FAQ, Freevision Play is available in South Africa only.
For South Africans living in the US, the fix is simple. Connect a VPN to a server in South Africa, your virtual location moves home, and you watch exactly as you would in Durban or Pretoria. We recommend NordVPN, and setup takes a few minutes. Waiting for you are 18 TV channels and 6 radio stations, live streams plus catch-up and on-demand shows. Don’t skip Phuthuloha TV, the first entertainment channel made only in Sesotho, Sepedi and Setswana, streaming exclusively here.

Quick answer
Can you watch Freevision Play outside South Africa?
Officially, Freevision Play is meant for South Africa only, as operator Sentech states itself. With a VPN you can unlock it in a few minutes: a server in South Africa changes your virtual location, and the service treats you like a viewer in Soweto. NordVPN has worked best for us. Then sign in with your name, email and password or a Google account, and stream live channels, catch-up TV and on-demand shows, still free.

Steer clear of free VPNs. Most of them actually collect and sell your data, lack proper security audits, and can even expose you to malware. They’re also useless for streaming. Platforms block them instantly, leaving you with more headaches than solutions. Stick to paid VPNs with verified audits, like NordVPN, if you want something that actually works.
About the platform
Who’s behind the service?
What is Freevision Play
Freevision Play is the free internet TV service from Sentech, South Africa’s state-owned signal distributor. Its focus is local: community stations Soweto TV, Cape Town TV and 1KZN TV, the exclusive Phuthuloha TV in Sesotho, Sepedi and Setswana, the kids’ channel Afrokiddos and movie channels packed with Nollywood. Community radio, catch-up and on-demand shows complete the package. There’s no subscription and no decoder, and advertising pays the bills. TV channels need a quick login with email or a Google account. Watch on the web, iPhone, iPad, Android and Android TV, or send the picture to a bigger screen with AirPlay or Chromecast. Officially, the service is for South Africa only. With a VPN server in South Africa, your local community station comes along wherever you live, from Soweto TV to Cape Town TV.

Major changes
- The first version of the freevision play app lands in the App Store, published by technical partner Broadsmart and giving the South African internet TV service its first mobile form.
- The service Sentech had previously presented as FreeVision TV launches publicly as Freevision Play, with a website, apps, the community channels Cape Town TV, 1KZN TV and Soweto TV, plus radio.
- Phuthuloha TV launches exclusively on Freevision Play as the first entertainment channel broadcasting only in Sesotho, Sepedi and Setswana. Sentech announced the launch the following day.
- App version 1.0.1 adds on-demand viewing. The release notes put it plainly: Freevision Play now supports Video on Demand, alongside the live channels and radio.
- Afree TV launches as a separate, free global streaming brand with its own website, running on Freevision Play technology. It is not a rename; both services exist side by side.
- Sentech, the MDDA and the government's GCIS sign an agreement to digitize 22 community broadcasters, including carrying their programming on Freevision Play.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before you start watching Freevision Play.
Yes. Freevision Play is free and doesn’t require a subscription, as its own help pages spell out. Advertising pays the bills, so expect commercial breaks around shows. If you’re watching from the US, the only thing you pay for is the VPN, such as NordVPN. The TV service itself doesn’t charge you anything.
NordVPN has been our most reliable pick. Connect to a server in South Africa, get a South African IP address, and your virtual location is back home. From there, community channels and radio play anywhere, whether you’re in Houston, Atlanta or on a road trip. Setup takes a few minutes, and the same connection covers other South African services too.
You can watch in a web browser, in the app for iPhone and iPad, on Android phones and tablets, and on smart TVs running Android TV. You can also cast from your phone to a bigger screen with AirPlay or Chromecast, which makes an evening of Soweto TV on the living room TV easy.
No. Sentech does run a satellite service with a decoder under the Freevision name, but this one is internet only. All you need is a connection and a browser, a phone or an Android TV. No receiver, no dish, just an account and a couple of taps.
Registration asks only for your name, email and password, or you can sign in with a Google account. The form doesn’t ask for a phone number. You need to be logged in for the TV channels, while community radio stations such as Vuma FM or Moutse FM play without an account.
The core is community and regional TV, including Soweto TV, Cape Town TV and 1KZN TV. On top of that, Freevision Play adds faith programming, a sports channel, movie channels built around Nollywood, romance and comedy, and the kids’ channel Afrokiddos. Community radio rounds out the lineup.
Yes. Beyond live TV, the service offers catch-up viewing and on-demand shows. The app has supported them since the October 14, 2025 update, which added Video on Demand. So if the time difference means you miss an evening show in Johannesburg, you can watch it later.
If you know Pluto TV, the idea will feel familiar: TV over the internet with no cable box. The difference is the content. Here you get South African community and regional stations from Johannesburg, Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal. From the US, a VPN with a South African server gets you in.
There are. Phuthuloha TV is the first entertainment channel broadcasting only in Sesotho, Sepedi and Setswana, and it streams exclusively on this platform. For families abroad who want to keep a home language alive, that’s rare.
Yes. Install the app on a smart TV running Android TV, or cast from an iPhone, iPad or Android phone using AirPlay or Chromecast. Keep your VPN connected to a South African server on the device that plays the stream.
