What is APTN+
APTN+ is the subscription streaming service of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, the Winnipeg non-profit that has carried Indigenous programming across Canada since 1999. It launched in 2019 as APTN lumi and took the name APTN+ in November 2025. The catalogue gathers Indigenous drama, documentaries and children’s shows, with titles in English, French and Indigenous languages such as Cree and Inuktitut. It runs without ads, supports offline downloads, streams up to 1080p and is sold only in Canada.

Major changes
- Canada’s regulator granted APTN a license with mandatory carriage on February 22, 1999, and the network went on air that September 1 as the world’s first national Indigenous broadcaster.
- APTN announced its own subscription library, lumi, on September 16, 2019, and launched it that October as Canada’s first Indigenous-focused streaming service, ad free from day one.
- From December 17, 2020, lumi could be subscribed to inside the Apple TV app in Canada, seven day trial included. Today the service runs through the browser and the mobile apps only.
- APTN moved the service onto Kaltura’s end to end platform, wiring the network’s content system into web and mobile playback, on demand video in Indigenous languages and subscription purchases.
- App version 1.0.50 added download to go, so episodes save for offline viewing, plus AirPlay and Chromecast casting to a big screen, two months before the service changed its name.
- APTN widened its digital footprint. The free channel APTN Beyond, built from the network’s paranormal series, launched on The Roku Channel and Pluto TV in Canada, and select shows reached Air Canada flights.
- The apps and the website dropped the lumi name for APTN+. Version 1.2.0 shipped with a single release note about the fresh name and look, and aptnlumi.ca has redirected to aptnplus.ca ever since.
- Animal Nation premiered on APTN and APTN+, a seven part wildlife docuseries narrated by Tantoo Cardinal that follows bear, eagle, bison, salmon, caribou, beaver and wolf through Indigenous knowledge.
- Rezervations for Two, the network’s first Indigenous dating show, hosted by Scott Wabano and Kairyn Potts and shot in Winnipeg, landed on APTN and APTN+ after its world premiere at imagineNATIVE.
