How to Watch AfriDocs outside South Africa: VPN Guide 2026
AfriDocs isn’t a streaming giant. It’s run by STEPS, a Cape Town nonprofit that makes and distributes documentaries, together with the Bertha Foundation, and it offers 70 African and international documentaries with no account and no fee. The catch is geography: the site calls itself exclusively for Africa, but YouTube data from September 2026 shows otherwise: 43 of those films are cleared almost everywhere, while the other 27, more than a third, are limited mainly to African countries. Those limits are set by YouTube for each video, based on your IP address, not by the site itself.
If you want to watch AfriDocs outside South Africa with no gaps, a VPN with a South African server changes your virtual location, so the films YouTube holds back beyond Africa open up and the whole collection plays as if you were at home in South Africa. According to YouTube, every film is available there. We recommend ExpressVPN: setup takes a few minutes and the documentaries stay free.

Who’s behind the service?
What is AfriDocs
AfriDocs is a free website for African and international documentary films, run by STEPS, a Cape Town nonprofit, in partnership with the Bertha Foundation. Its streaming section, AfriDocs Anytime, gathers dozens of documentaries by filmmakers from across Africa, sorted into award winners, international titles and new additions, from The Letter and Zinder to Mama Africa and Days of Cannibalism, added in 2026. The Generation Africa collection follows young Africans on the move, while COVID19Stories brings short South African films from the pandemic. Watching is free with no sign-up, no account and no subscription, just an optional newsletter. Films play in an embedded YouTube player from the Afri Docs channel, where you can also find them directly. The site works in any browser on your computer or phone, and there are no dedicated apps. According to YouTube data, most films are cleared almost everywhere, but more than a third are restricted mainly to Africa. A VPN with a South African server brings the Africa-only films into reach as well.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our AfriDocs testing team · Updated September 27, 2026
- No sign-up, no card, no subscription: AfriDocs is completely free, so most documentaries start the moment the page loads.
- Check the New Additions category every few weeks, since 2026 has already brought Unite for Bissau, Democrats, and Days of Cannibalism to the lineup.
- Short on time? The COVID19Stories collection packs brief South African films from the pandemic, while Generation Africa digs into young African migration in titles like New Boats and Stay Up.
- Skip the app stores: AfriDocs has no app, so stream straight from any desktop or mobile browser, or find the films on the Afri Docs YouTube channel.
- More than a third of the films are locked mainly to Africa, so we recommend ExpressVPN with a South African server: it switches your virtual location and opens the whole collection like you're back home.
