Phony on Hulu: Release Date, Episode Schedule and Where to Watch

Imagine waking up in a hospital after a car crash and slowly realizing that the woman who says she’s your mother, your best friend and the principal of your school might not be who she claims. That’s the hook of Phony, a new Hulu original with Connie Britton, and it arrives with two episodes on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, just in time for Halloween.

In the US, Phony streams on Hulu and on Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers. Viewers in Canada and Australia get it on Disney+ the same day. In the UK and Ireland, Disney+ had not announced a date as of October 15, 2026. Below you’ll find the full episode schedule, the cast, the trailer and a simple way to reach your own Hulu account when you’re traveling.

Phony release date and where to watch it

Disney has confirmed the premiere: two episodes on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Here’s where the show is listed in the main English-speaking markets right now.

What time does it drop? Neither Hulu nor Disney gives an exact release time, only the date (as of October 15, 2026). We’ll add it here as soon as one is published.

A note for readers in Britain and Ireland: Phony doesn’t appear in the official Disney+ UK October roundup. That doesn’t mean it won’t come. Back in April, when Deadline reported five new cast members, it said the show would stream on Disney+ internationally. A UK date simply hasn’t been set yet. Until then, our overview of streaming services in the UK shows what’s available there today.

How many episodes does Phony have?

Eight, each a half-hour long. After the double premiere, Hulu releases one new episode every Tuesday until the finale on December 1, 2026.

Disney confirms the premiere and the finale. The dates in between follow the every-Tuesday rhythm it describes. That weekly plan applies to Hulu in the US. Disney+ in Canada and Australia has confirmed the October 20 premiere, but not the weekly rhythm, so check the app there each week.

Short episodes and a weekly drop make this an easy show to keep up with. Disney+ rates it TV-MA in the US and Canada, so it’s not one for the younger kids, even with the teenage hero. If you’re stacking up fall mysteries, Crystal Lake’s release date and where to watch it is another October premiere worth a look.

What is the show about?

Sonny, a teenager, wakes up in the hospital after a car accident. Soon he starts to suspect that Ellen, the woman who says she’s his mother and his closest friend, is a fraud. The catch: in his small town, he’s the only one who feels something is off. Ellen, meanwhile, is trying to get life back to normal and is clearly worried about her son.

So Sonny does what any stubborn teenager would. He gathers a group of friends and starts investigating in secret. Disney pitches it as a mystery with humor and supernatural and sci-fi touches, and at its heart it’s a coming-of-age story about the moment a kid starts to see a parent differently.

The series comes from creator Nick Paley (Broad City), who wrote the first two episodes and directed half of the first season. Anthony King is co-showrunner. Executive producers include Connie Britton, Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg of Goddard Textiles, and Charlie Alderman. 20th Television produces.

Who’s in the cast?

Connie Britton leads the series. Disney’s own guide introduces her through 9‑1‑1 and American Horror Story. Here’s who plays whom, according to Disney and Deadline:

• Connie Britton as Ellen, Sonny’s only parent, closest friend and the principal of his school

• Sam Nivola as Sonny

• Meera Syal as Sharla, a private investigator Sonny hires

• Grace Brennan as Mallory, Sonny’s grade school crush

• Maliq Johnson as Vogel, Sonny’s childhood best friend

• Colter Lee as Weldon, Mallory’s cousin, a new student and Sonny’s biggest confidant

• Mahaela Park as Chloe, Sonny’s friend and class president

Is there a trailer?

Yes. Hulu posted the official trailer on its YouTube channel on September 29, 2026. It runs 2:23.

How to watch Hulu outside the US

Hulu is an American service. Disney says Hulu on Disney+ is available to US residents only and that location data is required to watch certain content. That’s a problem if you’re a US subscriber on a fall vacation or a business trip and you don’t want to miss the double premiere on October 20, then a new episode every Tuesday.

The fix is a VPN with a server in the United States. It connects you to your own Hulu account as if you were at home. You keep paying for your Hulu plan as usual: the VPN changes your virtual location, not your bill. The table below shows which VPNs currently work with Hulu according to StreamFix data. For more on the service itself, see our Hulu guide, and if you want to know how the ratings are built, see our VPN rating methodology.

Watch Hulu abroad in four steps

1. Pick a VPN from our table

Choose one that currently works with Hulu and install its app on the phone, laptop or TV you’ll watch on.

2. Connect to a US server

Select any server in the United States so your connection appears to come from home.

3. Open Hulu and sign in

Use your usual Hulu account, or Hulu on Disney+ if you have the bundle.

4. Press play on October 20

Start the first two episodes of Phony, then come back every Tuesday for the next one.

Is this legal? A VPN is a legal privacy tool in the US, and you’re watching on a subscription you already pay for. Want your other American apps on the road as well? Our guide to US streaming services from anywhere covers them.

Is Hulu available outside the US?

Hulu is built for American viewers. Outside the US, Hulu originals stream on Disney+ instead, and Disney itself notes that content and platform availability may vary by region. Phony shows exactly how that plays out: Canada and Australia list it for October 20, while the UK and Ireland had no date as of October 15, 2026.

If you live in Canada or Australia, you don’t need Hulu at all for this one. Phony will be on your regular Disney+ subscription on premiere day.

Disney+ in Canada, Australia and the UK on the road

Traveling is where it gets tricky. According to Disney, the Disney+ lineup varies by country. If you’re a Canadian or Australian subscriber on a trip abroad, a VPN with a server in your home country connects you to your own Disney+ account, the same way you’d sign in at home. Disney+ subscribers from Ireland are covered by EU portability rules: on a temporary stay in another EU country, they get the same content as at home.

For UK viewers, the honest answer today is to wait for the Disney+ announcement. We’ll update this article once a UK date is out. In the meantime, our page on UK streaming services from abroad helps British viewers who are away from home keep their usual apps.

Ready for the October 20 premiere?

If you’re a US Hulu subscriber and you’ll be abroad this fall, set things up before Tuesday. Pick a VPN from our table, connect to a US server and the double premiere is waiting in your own account.
