How to Watch YouTube from Anywhere: VPN Guide 2026
YouTube reaches more than 2.7 billion people every month and runs on practically every screen you own, so it is easy to forget it has borders. Yet two slices of YouTube stay firmly fenced off by geography. YouTube TV, the live-TV bundle of 130-plus US channels, has never been sold outside the United States. And on the free app, music videos, sports clips and network uploads still greet travellers with a flat “not available in your country.” Watching the locked side of YouTube from anywhere comes down to where your IP address appears to sit.
That is what a VPN fixes. Route your connection through a US server, pick up an American IP, and YouTube TV loads its full channel grid while the region-blocked videos quietly start playing. With Surfshark the picture climbs to 4K, and the same trick works whether you are an expat keeping up with home broadcasts or a traveller who refuses to miss a game. Setup takes minutes, and the free app stays free.

Quick answer
Can you watch YouTube abroad with a VPN?
Mostly, yes. The free YouTube app works in 190 countries, so casual browsing needs nothing extra. What does not travel is YouTube TV, which is US-only, plus the many videos blocked with “not available in your country.” To reach those, connect Surfshark to a server in the United States, refresh the page, and the live channels and region-locked clips play in up to 4K, exactly as they do for viewers back in the States.

How-to
How to Unblock YouTube with a VPN
Takes about 2 minutes. Works on your phone, tablet, TV, PC, or laptop.
1
Choose a reliable VPN
Pick a service with fast, well-populated US servers such as Surfshark, from $1.78. Free VPNs are throttled and YouTube TV blocks most of their address ranges outright.
A 30-day money-back guarantee lets you test it risk-free.
2
Connect to a US server
Open the VPN app and connect to a server in the United States, ideally near a major city, then wait for the handshake to confirm before loading YouTube.
A nearby server keeps latency low and high-resolution playback smooth.
3
Open YouTube or YouTube TV
Reload youtube.com or launch the app. If a video or YouTube TV still shows your old region, clear the cache and turn off any device-level location sharing.
On phones, disable precise location so YouTube TV trusts your VPN.
4
Press play
Browse the live channel grid or reopen the blocked video and start streaming in up to 4K. The free app stays free; only Premium and YouTube TV are paid.
Reconnect to the same server if a stream suddenly geo-checks again.

⚠️
Steer clear of free VPNs. Most of them actually collect and sell your data, lack proper security audits, and can even expose you to malware. They’re also useless for streaming. Platforms block them instantly, leaving you with more headaches than solutions. Stick to paid VPNs with verified audits, like Surfshark, if you want something that actually works.
YouTube is the world’s largest video platform, owned by Google: free and ad-supported in 190 countries, with an ad-free Premium tier that bundles YouTube Music and a separate US-only live-TV service, YouTube TV. The app itself works almost anywhere, but YouTube TV’s 130-plus live channels never left the United States and countless videos are region-locked with a “not available in your country” wall. A VPN with a US IP address unlocks the live channels and those blocked clips in up to 4K.

Major changes
Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim launched YouTube as a site for sharing video easily. Karim uploaded the first clip, "Me at the zoo", that April.
Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock, folding the video site into the tech giant that would later reorganise under Alphabet.
YouTube launched YouTube TV in the United States, a live-TV bundle with dozens of channels and unlimited cloud DVR. It still has not crossed the US border.
The earlier YouTube Red became YouTube Premium, alongside a standalone YouTube Music. Premium stripped out ads and added downloads and background play.
Neal Mohan, the long-serving product chief, took over as YouTube CEO after Susan Wojcicki stepped down. Under him the service leaned harder into Shorts, subscriptions and live sport.
YouTube rolled out the cheaper Premium Lite tier in the US, which removes ads from most videos but leaves out YouTube Music, downloads and background play.
YouTube TV added cheaper genre packages from just under $55 a month, such as sports or entertainment tiers, as a counterweight to its $82.99 base plan.
YouTube became the named "preferred platform" of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosting highlights and companion content for a global audience.

4 tips from our YouTube testing team · Updated June 1, 2026
1
Plain YouTube works abroad just fine; you only need a US VPN for YouTube TV and US-locked videos, and even then with device location turned off.
2
YouTube Premium pricing swings a lot by country and is tied to the country of your Google account payment method, so a VPN alone will not lower your rate.
3
The cheaper Premium Lite drops ads from most videos but leaves out YouTube Music, offline downloads and background play.
4
YouTube TV checks more than your IP, reading your device GPS too, so disable precise location on your phone and your TV.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before subscribing to YouTube.
Yes, core YouTube is free and funded by advertising. You need no subscription and no card, just open the site or app and videos start playing. In return you see ads before and during clips. If you want an ad-free experience, YouTube offers paid Premium. A separate product, YouTube TV, is a premium live-TV service sold only in the United States.
That block is set by the rights holder, who has cleared the content only for certain countries, usually music, sport or broadcaster uploads. YouTube reads your country from your IP address. Connect Surfshark to a server where the video is allowed, often the US, refresh the page and the clip plays. Smart DNS rarely beats these particular blocks.
Only with a US IP address. YouTube TV is sold exclusively in the United States and it also checks your device location. Connect Surfshark to a US server and switch off precise location on your phone or TV so the app trusts the VPN. The full channel grid then loads, much like a US version of Hulu + Live TV.
YouTube Premium for one person starts at $15.99 a month, and the price varies by country. Family and student plans exist too, plus a cheaper Premium Lite. Premium removes ads and adds downloads, background play and YouTube Music. You will find the exact figure for each tier in the plans overview higher up this page.
Yes. A full YouTube Premium subscription includes YouTube Music Premium, so you get ad-free music with background play and downloads on your phone. The cheaper Premium Lite is the exception and does not include it. If you only want music, YouTube Music can be subscribed to on its own for less than full Premium.
Offline downloads are a Premium perk. In the app you save a video or a whole playlist and watch it with no connection, handy on a plane. The free tier and Premium Lite do not offer downloads. If you are travelling and want to save content that is region-locked where you are, connect Surfshark to a US server before downloading.
Almost everything. YouTube has apps for the web, iOS and Android, Samsung, LG, Sony and VIZIO smart TVs, plus Android TV, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, PlayStation, Xbox and Chromecast. YouTube TV runs on the same hardware but needs a US account, so from abroad you pair it with Surfshark on a server in the United States.
Plenty of videos run in up to 4K with HDR, and some uploads go higher, even 8K. YouTube TV tops out at full HD on its base plan. Real resolution depends on the upload and your connection speed. For smooth playback through Surfshark pick a nearby server and expect heavier data use at the highest resolutions.
Most often the app caught your real location from the device location setting or an overloaded IP address. Turn off precise location in your system, clear the app data and connect Surfshark to a different, quieter US server. YouTube TV checks location more aggressively than ordinary videos, so you may need both fixes at once.
Both are US live-TV bundles with cloud DVR, but YouTube TV leans on a single 130-plus channel plan with NFL Sunday Ticket, while Hulu + Live TV folds in the Disney+ and Hulu libraries. Neither is sold abroad, so from outside the US you reach either one with Surfshark on a US server and location sharing switched off.
