How to Watch ORF SPORT+ outside Austria: VPN Guide 2026
Austria’s public broadcaster ORF runs a dedicated channel for the sports its main networks skip: the Frauen Bundesliga, the volleyball league, handball, judo, athletics, swimming and a heavy dose of winter sports. ORF SPORT+ began as a round-the-clock channel back in 2011 and has streamed on the ORF ON platform since May 2024. ORF SPORT+ streams for free, but only to viewers with an Austrian IP address. Load on.orf.at from a US connection and the live feed is replaced by a flat notice that the video is available in Austria only, and the picture never starts.
The fix is quick. Route your connection through NordVPN to a server in Austria, pick up an Austrian IP, and the live stream plus the 24-hour rewind play in 1080p exactly as they would in Vienna. You never sign up for a paid plan, because the service itself is funded by the Austrian household fee and stays free for viewers. You only pay for the VPN, which earns its keep elsewhere too.

Who’s behind the service?
What is ORF SPORT+
ORF SPORT+ is Austria’s public-service sports channel, dedicated since 2011 to the disciplines that rarely make it onto the main schedule. Its live coverage spans volleyball, handball, judo, athletics, swimming, winter sports and Austria’s own domestic leagues. You can watch it free through ORF ON, though streaming is limited to viewers inside Austria.
Company and history
- ORF launched the sports channel ORF Sport Plus, which took over the sports programming the TW1 outlet had carried since 2000. The broadcaster’s sport finally had a channel of its own.
- Director-General Alexander Wrabetz expanded the station into a round-the-clock 24-hour channel and rebranded it ORF SPORT+. It went live the same day as the culture channel ORF III and took over its own satellite and cable slots.
- ORF replaced its old ORF TVthek media library with the new ORF ON platform. The channel’s live stream and 24-hour rewind have since been delivered through on.orf.at, still locked to Austria.
- The Austrian parliament passed an amendment to the ORF Act and froze the household fee at 15.30 euros a month through the end of 2029. That kept funding for the public channels, the sports station included, in place.
- The Nationalrat adopted a further amendment to the ORF Act, allowing the sports channel to run as a purely digital service. Linear broadcasting is set to continue until 2026, after which it may move fully to streaming on ORF ON.
- A dramatic 1:1 draw on the final day of the Frauen Bundesliga settled the title. FK Austria Wien claimed their first ever championship, ending ten years of St. Pölten dominance.
