How to Watch Niconico Outside Japan: VPN Guide 2026
Comments that race straight across the picture in real time are a giveaway that you are watching something Japanese, and that scrolling layer of text has a name: danmaku, invented right here back in 2006. Watching Niconico outside Japan hits a wall, though. Since late 2024 the site has fenced off chunks of playback for anyone outside Japan, and in February 2026 it pulled the Nicopedia encyclopedia behind the same border. From your home IP you land on a thinned-out catalog or an outright error.
The fix is refreshingly simple. Grab ExpressVPN, connect to a server in Japan, and your connection borrows a local address. From there you sign in as if you were in Tokyo: the free tier and paid Premium both run in full, peak-hour queues vanish, and video climbs to 1080p. It works on the web, in the app, and on the Switch console.

Who’s behind the service?
What is Niconico
Niconico (niconico douga) is the Japanese video platform launched in 2006 and owned since 2014 by the Kadokawa group. It is the oldest and most influential Japanese service of its kind and the one that introduced live, on-screen scrolling comments known as danmaku, a convention since copied across Asia. The mix spans user-generated video, anime streams, live concerts, otaku and Vocaloid culture and community creativity. The free tier is partly reachable from abroad, though since October 2024 the service blocks many videos and live streams from outside Japan. The paid Premium plan at 790 yen removes resolution caps and peak-hour queuing.

Company and history
- The service launched as Nico Nico Douga and immediately introduced the idea that made it famous: viewer comments scrolling straight across the playing video.
- The site renamed itself from Nico Nico Douga to today's Niconico and rolled out a major overhaul nicknamed "Zero" that unified its look and features.
- Niconico arrived on the Nintendo Switch as the very first third-party media app that Nintendo allowed onto its new console.
- After sixteen years untouched, Premium rose from 550 to 790 yen a month. The operator also scrapped the so-called economy mode that throttled quality at peak times.
- A BlackSuit ransomware attack knocked all of Niconico and other Kadokawa services offline on June 8. The site went dark and data on roughly 254,000 people leaked.
- After two months Niconico returned in a new version dubbed "Return of Niconico". Its systems were rebuilt almost from scratch and moved to the public cloud.
- From October 30 Niconico began blocking overseas access to certain services. Some videos and live streams stopped working for people outside Japan without a Japanese IP.
- On January 7 Sony became Kadokawa's largest shareholder. For roughly 50 billion yen it took a ten percent stake, opening the door to deeper collaboration around anime.
- Niconico quietly extended its geo-block to the Nicopedia encyclopedia. Overseas fans lost yet another part of the service, now reachable only with a Japanese IP.

Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our Niconico testing team · Updated July 17, 2026
- Subscribe to Premium directly on the Niconico website rather than through the App Store or Google Play, where store commission makes the same membership noticeably more expensive.
- Licensed anime, music and official channels have been blocked outside Japan since October 2024, so connect ExpressVPN to a Japanese server to keep your access.
- Premium unlocks 1080p playback, which is now paywalled for free accounts, plus priority during congestion so you are not dropped from busy broadcasts.
- As a Premium member you can replay big live events like Niconico Chokaigi via timeshift after the broadcast ends, with no need to reserve them in advance.
- The interface and the signature scrolling comments are mostly in Japanese, so run your browser's page translation and keep the comment overlay on for the full experience.
