How to Watch Citytv+ Abroad: VPN Guide 2026
Rogers spent three years pulling Citytv+ out of a storefront it did not own. What began in 2022 as a paid add-on inside Prime Video now runs as its own app, and it carries the widest single stack of Canadian cable brands you can buy without a set-top box: Citytv, Bravo, HGTV, Food Network, Discovery, FX, FXX, ID, Magnolia Network, OWN and OMNI, live channels and on-demand libraries together.
That stack stops at the border. Rights are cleared for Canada, the iPhone app is listed only in the Canadian App Store, and a login that worked in Toronto on Friday throws a location error on Monday in Lisbon. NordVPN is the shortest way around it: pick a Canadian city, reopen the app, and the account you already pay for behaves the way it did at home, right up to 1080p.

Quick answer
Can I keep watching Citytv+ outside Canada?
Yes, provided Citytv+ still sees a Canadian connection. Rights for the Citytv, Bravo, HGTV and FX libraries are Canadian only, so the apps check where the request comes from before anything plays. Connect through NordVPN on a server in Toronto or Vancouver, sign in with the same credentials, and the catalogue loads unchanged. Your own subscription still pays for it. One caveat: the iPhone app is published only to the Canadian App Store.

How-to
How to Unblock Citytv+ with a VPN
Takes about 2 minutes. Works on your phone, tablet, TV, PC, or laptop.
1
Get a VPN with Canadian servers
Not every provider keeps Canadian cities online. NordVPN does, from $2.99 a month, and it is the one this guide tests against.
Install it before you fly. Some networks abroad block the download page itself.
2
Connect to Toronto or Vancouver
Pick a Canadian city rather than the automatic option, because Citytv+ only trusts a Canadian address. Automatic routing hunts the fastest server anywhere, which is exactly what you do not want here.
Reload the browser or force-close the app after switching, so the old location is not cached.
3
Sign in to Citytv+
Open the app or citytvplus.ca and use your existing credentials. Nothing about the account changes; only the address Citytv+ sees does.
Outside Canada the iPhone app will not appear in your local store. The web player works in any browser.
4
Play something and check the quality
Live channels and box sets on Citytv+ both stream up to 1080p. If the picture stalls, drop to a closer Canadian city instead of lowering the resolution.
There is no offline download, so a stable connection matters more here than on most services.

⚠️
Steer clear of free VPNs. Most of them actually collect and sell your data, lack proper security audits, and can even expose you to malware. They’re also useless for streaming. Platforms block them instantly, leaving you with more headaches than solutions. Stick to paid VPNs with verified audits, like NordVPN, if you want something that actually works.

Citytv+ is the streaming arm of Rogers Sports and Media, and it is closer to a cable package than to a film library. One subscription opens the live feeds and on-demand catalogues of fourteen Canadian channels at once, from Citytv, Bravo and FX to HGTV, Food Network, Discovery, ID, Magnolia Network and OWN, with the multilingual OMNI service alongside them. It began life inside Prime Video and only became a standalone product in late 2025, which is why its apps still feel newer than the brands they carry. Licensing keeps the whole thing inside Canada, so the account travels only as far as the connection behind it does.

Company and history
Major changes
CITY-TV signs on in Toronto from a converted nightclub, launched by Phyllis Switzer, Moses Znaimer, Jerry Grafstein and Edgar Cowan, who together raised more than two million dollars for the station.
Rogers Communications completes its purchase of the Citytv stations for 375 million dollars, after regulators force CTVglobemedia to divest them as a condition of its CHUM Limited takeover.
The network drops its longer name and rebrands simply as City, a shortened identity it keeps for the next several seasons before the original Citytv wordmark is brought back.
Rogers launches Citytv+ as a paid add-on channel inside Prime Video at 4.99 dollars a month with a thirty day trial, bundled that same day with the free CityNews 24/7 stream.
The service leaves its Amazon-only home: Citytv+ arrives as a standalone subscription on Apple and Android devices, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung TV, Rogers Xfinity and the web, with a seven day trial and a Sportsnet+ bundle.
Rogers sets out the 2026/27 slate for Citytv and Citytv+: twenty one returning hits, the new FBI drama Line of Fire, a fourth season of Law and Order Toronto, and a stated reach of more than 27.7 million Canadians.

Insider Tips
Tips & tricks you should know
5 tips from our Citytv+ testing team · Updated August 7, 2026
1
The yearly plan costs 99.00 CAD against 9.99 CAD a month, so twelve months bought upfront save you about twenty dollars. Both start with the same seven day trial, which is long enough to see whether the live channels matter to you.
2
The reason to pay is not Citytv itself. It is the second tier: ID, Magnolia Network, Cooking Channel, MotorTrend and OWN rarely appear together anywhere else, and each one brings its full back catalogue rather than a handful of recent episodes.
3
There is no Roku app and no cast button. If your television is not a Samsung and you do not own a Fire TV stick, the browser at citytvplus.ca plus an HDMI cable is the reliable route, and it is also the only one that works from outside Canada.
4
The 31.99 CAD bundle only makes sense if you actually want Sportsnet+. Bought separately the two subscriptions cost more, but if hockey and baseball leave you cold you are paying roughly three times the standalone price for channels you will not open.
5
Connect through NordVPN to Toronto or Vancouver rather than letting it pick a server for you. Automatic selection optimises for speed and will happily put you in Chicago, which is exactly the address the player refuses.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before subscribing to Citytv+.
Rogers sells Citytv+ two ways. A rolling monthly plan and a yearly plan that works out cheaper over twelve months, both opening with a seven day trial. There is also a bundle that adds the Sportsnet+ Standard package for people who want the hockey and baseball rights alongside the entertainment channels. Current figures for every plan sit in the pricing table further down this page.
Fourteen brands plus OMNI: Citytv, Discovery, Food Network, HGTV, Bravo, FX, FXX, ID, Magnolia Network, MotorTrend, Discovery Science, Animal Planet, Cooking Channel and OWN. Each one gives Citytv+ both a live feed and its on-demand library, so a channel you flick to at nine can be restarted from episode one afterwards. Exclusive titles include Poker Face and Colin From Accounts.
No. The licensing behind Citytv+ is Canadian and the player checks the origin of the connection, so a foreign address returns an error rather than a reduced catalogue. NordVPN on a Toronto or Vancouver server restores the Canadian view. This is the same border logic that keeps Hulu inside the United States, and it applies to the live channels just as much as to the box sets.
Not at the moment. The Citytv+ device list runs to Apple and Android devices, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung televisions, Rogers Xfinity boxes and the browser. Roku owners and anyone who casts from a phone are the two groups most visibly left out, and it is the complaint that comes up most often in app store reviews. Rogers also notes the service is absent from Rogers Streaming.
No. Offline viewing is not part of Citytv+, on any device or plan. Everything streams live from Rogers servers, which makes connection quality more important here than on services that let you cache a season in advance. If you expect long stretches without reliable wifi, plan around that rather than around the app.
The Citytv+ app for iPhone sits at roughly four stars out of five across several thousand ratings, which is respectable for a broadcaster app. Reviews split cleanly: people like the breadth of the channel list and complain about playback stalls and the missing cast button. It needs iOS 16 or newer, and the Android edition has passed a hundred thousand installs.
Citytv+ started inside Prime Video in 2022 as a paid add-on channel, sold for less than half its current price, and stayed there for three years. The standalone apps arrived in September 2025, which is when it became possible to subscribe without an Amazon account. The Citytv brand behind it goes back to a single Toronto station that signed on in 1972.
One with real Canadian city servers rather than a single national endpoint, because a busy shared address is the first thing a broadcaster blocks. NordVPN keeps several Canadian locations and starts at $2.99, and it is the setup this guide checked Citytv+ against. Free tiers rarely include Canada at all, and when they do the addresses are already flagged.
